2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 2 He saw two boats standing by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.
3 And going into one of the ships that was Simon’s, he desired him to draw back a little from the land. And sitting he taught the multitudes out of the ship. 3 He entered into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.
4 Now when he had ceased to speak, he said to Simon: Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
5 And Simon answering said to him: Master, we have labored all the night, and have taken nothing: but at thy word I will let down the net. 5 Simon answered him, “Master, we worked all night and caught nothing; but at your word I will let down the net.”
6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a very great multitude of fishes, and their net broke. 6 When they had done this, they caught a great multitude of fish, and their net was breaking.
7 And they beckoned to their partners that were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they were almost sinking. 7 They beckoned to their partners in the other boat, that they should come and help them. They came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink.
8 Which when Simon Peter saw, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying: Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 8 But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord.”
9 For he was wholly astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken. 9 For he was amazed, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had caught;
10 And so were also James and John the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. And Jesus saith to Simon: Fear not: from henceforth thou shalt catch men. 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid. From now on you will be catching people alive.”
11 And having brought their ships to land, leaving all things, they followed him. 11 When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything, and followed him.
12 And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy, who seeing Jesus, and falling on his face, besought him, saying: Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 12 While he was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man full of leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, saying, “Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean.”
13 And stretching forth his hand, he touched him, saying: I will. Be thou cleansed. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. 13 He stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I want to. Be made clean.” Immediately the leprosy left him.
14 And he charged him that he should tell no man, but, Go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing according as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them. 14 He commanded him to tell no one, “But go your way and show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing according to what Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.”
15 But the fame of him went abroad the more, and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities. 15 But the report concerning him spread much more, and great multitudes came together to hear and to be healed by him of their infirmities.
16 And he retired into the desert, and prayed. 16 But he withdrew himself into the desert and prayed.
17 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he sat teaching, that there were also Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, that were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judea and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was to heal them. 17 On one of those days, he was teaching; and there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by who had come out of every village of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. The power of the Lord was with him to heal them.
18 And behold, men brought in a bed a man, who had the palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. 18 Behold, men brought a paralyzed man on a cot, and they sought to bring him in to lay before Jesus.
19 And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in, because of the multitude, they went up upon the roof, and let him down through the tiles with his bed into the midst before Jesus. 19 Not finding a way to bring him in because of the multitude, they went up to the housetop and let him down through the tiles with his cot into the middle before Jesus.
20 Whose faith when he saw, he said: Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. 20 Seeing their faith, he said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”
21 And the scribes and Pharisees began to think, saying: Who is this who speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? 21 The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?”
21 καὶ ἤρξαντο διαλογίζεσθαι οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι λέγοντες· τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὃς λαλεῖ βλασφημίας; τίς δύναται ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας εἰ μὴ μόνος ὁ Θεός;
22 And when Jesus knew their thoughts, answering, he said to them: What is it you think in your hearts? 22 But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, answered them, “Why are you reasoning so in your hearts?
22 ἐπιγνοὺς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς αὐτῶν ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· τί διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν;
23 Which is easier to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise and walk? 23 Which is easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’?
23 τί ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον, εἰπεῖν, ἀφέωνταί σοι αἱ ἁμαρτίαι σου, ἢ εἰπεῖν, ἔγειρε καὶ περιπάτει;
24 But that you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say to thee, Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thy house. 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, arise, take up your cot, and go to your house.”
25 And immediately rising up before them, he took up the bed on which he lay; and he went away to his own house, glorifying God. 25 Immediately he rose up before them, and took up that which he was laying on, and departed to his house, glorifying God.
26 And all were astonished; and they glorified God. And they were filled with fear, saying: We have seen wonderful things today. 26 Amazement took hold on all, and they glorified God. They were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things today.”
27 And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom, and he said to him: Follow me. 27 After these things he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax office, and said to him, “Follow me!”
28 And leaving all things, he rose up and followed him. 28 He left everything, and rose up and followed him.
29 And Levi made him a great feast in his own house; and there was a great company of publicans, and of others, that were at table with them. 29 Levi made a great feast for him in his house. There was a great crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining with them.
30 But the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying to his disciples: Why do you eat and drink with publicans and sinners? 30 Their scribes and the Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?”
30 καὶ ἐγόγγυζον οἱ γραμματεῖς αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ λέγοντες· διατί μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίετε καὶ πίνετε;
31 And Jesus answering, said to them: They that are whole, need not the physician: but they that are sick. 31 Jesus answered them, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do.
32 I came not to call the just, but sinners to penance. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
33 And they said to him: Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees in like manner; but thine eat and drink? 33 They said to him, “Why do John’s disciples often fast and pray, likewise also the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink?”
33 Οἱ δὲ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν· διατί οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου νηστεύουσι πυκνὰ καὶ δεήσεις ποιοῦνται, ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ τῶν Φαρισαίων, οἱ δὲ σοὶ ἐσθίουσι καὶ πίνουσιν;
34 To whom he said: Can you make the children of the bridegroom fast, whilst the bridegroom is with them? 34 He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them?
34 ὁ δὲ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· μὴ δύνασθε τοὺς υἱοὺς τοῦ νυμφῶνος, ἐν ᾧ ὁ νυμφίος μετ᾽ αὐτῶν ἐστι, ποιῆσαι νηστεύειν;
35 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, then shall they fast in those days. 35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them. Then they will fast in those days.”
36 And he spoke also a similitude to them: That no man putteth a piece from a new garment upon an old garment; otherwise he both rendeth the new, and the piece taken from the new agreeth not with the old. 36 He also told a parable to them. “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old garment, or else he will tear the new, and also the piece from the new will not match the old.
37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottle: otherwise the new wine will break the bottles, and it will be spilled, and the bottles will be lost. 37 No one puts new wine into old wineskins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled and the skins will be destroyed.
38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.
39 And no man drinking old, hath presently a mind to new: for he saith, The old is better. 39 No man having drunk old wine immediately desires new, for he says, ‘The old is better.’”
