Notes on this text (1)
GNV Geneva Bible (1599)
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 I lift vp mine eyes againe and looked, and behold, a man with a measuring line in his hand.
1 I lifted up my eyes, and saw, and behold, a man with a measuring line in his hand.
2 Then saide I, Whither goest thou? And he saide vnto me, To measure Ierusalem, that I may see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof.
2 Then I asked, “Where are you going?” He said to me, “To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and what is its length.”
3 And beholde, the Angel that talked with me, went foorth: and another Angel went out to meete him,
3 Behold, the angel who talked with me went out, and another angel went out to meet him,
4 And saide vnto him, Runne, speake to this yong man, and say, Ierusalem shalbe inhabited without walles, for the multitude of men and cattell therein.
4 and said to him, “Run, speak to this young man, saying, ‘Jerusalem will be inhabited as villages without walls, because of the multitude of men and livestock in it.
5 For I, saith the Lord, will be vnto her a wall of fire round about, and wil be the glory in the middes of her.
5 For I,’ says Yahweh, ‘will be to her a wall of fire around it, and I will be the glory in the middle of her.
6 Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the North, saith the Lord: for I haue scattered you into the foure winds of the heauen, saith ye Lord.
6 Come! Come! Flee from the land of the north,’ says Yahweh; ‘for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the sky,’ says Yahweh.
7 Saue thy selfe, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babel.
7 ‘Come, Zion! Escape, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon.’
8 For thus saith the Lord of hostes, After this glory hath hee sent me vnto the nations, which spoyled you: for he that toucheth you, toucheth the apple of his eye.
8 For Yahweh of Armies says: ‘For honor he has sent me to the nations which plundered you; for he who touches you touches the apple of his eye.
9 For beholde, I will lift vp mine hand vpon them: and they shalbe a spoyle to those that serued them, and ye shall knowe, that the Lord of hostes hath sent me.
9 For, behold, I will shake my hand over them, and they will be a plunder to those who served them; and you will know that Yahweh of Armies has sent me.
10 Reioyce, and be glad, O daughter Zion: for loe, I come, and will dwell in the middes of thee, saith the Lord.
10 Sing and rejoice, daughter of Zion! For behold, I come and I will dwell within you,’ says Yahweh.
11 And many nations shall be ioyned to the Lord in that day, and shalbe my people: and I will dwell in the middes of thee, and thou shalt knowe that the Lord of hostes hath sent me vnto thee.
11 Many nations shall join themselves to Yahweh in that day, and shall be my people; and I will dwell among you, and you shall know that Yahweh of Armies has sent me to you.
12 And the Lord shall inherite Iudah his portion in the holy lande, and shall chuse Ierusalem againe.
12 Yahweh will inherit Judah as his portion in the holy land, and will again choose Jerusalem.
13 Let all flesh be still before the Lord: for he is raised vp out of his holy place.
13 Be silent, all flesh, before Yahweh; for he has roused himself from his holy habitation!”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 2:8 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XX, Chapters 27–29)

Behold, I will bring mine hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and ye shall know that the Lord Almighty hath sent me." Observe, the Lord Almighty saith that the Lord Almighty sent Him.
