PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 And they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gadarenes,
1 They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
2 and He having come forth out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
2 When he had come out of the boat, immediately a man with an unclean spirit met him out of the tombs.
3 who had his dwelling in the tombs, and not even with chains was anyone able to bind him,
3 He lived in the tombs. Nobody could bind him any more, not even with chains,
4 because that many times he had been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been pulled in pieces by him, and the shackles broken in pieces, and none was able to tame him,
4 because he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the fetters broken in pieces. Nobody had the strength to tame him.
5 and always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying and cutting himself with stones.
5 Always, night and day, in the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying out, and cutting himself with stones.
6 And having seen Jesus from afar, he ran and prostrated to Him,
6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and bowed down to him,
7 and having called with a loud voice, he said, “What [regards] me and You, Jesus, Son of God the Most High? I adjure You by God, may You not afflict me!”
7 and crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, don’t torment me.”
8 For He said to him, “Come forth, unclean spirit, out of the man!”
8 For he said to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
9 And He was questioning him, “What [is] your name?” And he answered, saying, “Legion [is] my name, because we are many”;
9 He asked him, “What is your name?” He said to him, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”
10 and he was calling on Him much, that He may not send them out of the region.
10 He begged him much that he would not send them away out of the country.
11 And there was there, near the mountains, a great herd of pigs feeding,
11 Now on the mountainside there was a great herd of pigs feeding.
12 and all the demons called on Him, saying, “Send us to the pigs, that into them we may enter”;
12 All the demons begged him, saying, “Send us into the pigs, that we may enter into them.”
13 and immediately Jesus gave them leave, and having come forth, the unclean spirits entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep place to the sea—and they were about two thousand—and they were choked in the sea.
13 At once Jesus gave them permission. The unclean spirits came out and entered into the pigs. The herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and they were drowned in the sea.
14 And those feeding the pigs fled, and told in the city, and in the fields, and they came forth to see what it is that has been done;
14 Those who fed the pigs fled, and told it in the city and in the country. The people came to see what it was that had happened.
15 and they come to Jesus, and see the demoniac, sitting, and clothed, and right-minded—him having had the legion—and they were afraid;
15 They came to Jesus, and saw him who had been possessed by demons sitting, clothed, and in his right mind, even him who had the legion; and they were afraid.
16 and those having seen [it], declared to them how it had come to pass to the demoniac, and about the pigs;
16 Those who saw it declared to them what happened to him who was possessed by demons, and about the pigs.
17 and they began to call on Him to go away from their borders.
17 They began to beg him to depart from their region.
18 And He having gone into the boat, the demoniac was calling on Him that he may be with Him,
18 As he was entering into the boat, he who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be with him.
19 and Jesus did not permit him, but says to him, “Go away to your house, to your own [friends], and tell them how the LORD did great things to you, and dealt kindly with you”;
19 He didn’t allow him, but said to him, “Go to your house, to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you and how he had mercy on you.”
20 and he went away, and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how Jesus did great things to him, and all were wondering.
20 He went his way, and began to proclaim in Decapolis how Jesus had done great things for him, and everyone marveled.
21 And Jesus having passed over in the boat again to the other side, there was gathered a great multitude to Him, and He was near the sea,
21 When Jesus had crossed back over in the boat to the other side, a great multitude was gathered to him; and he was by the sea.
22 and behold, there comes one of the chiefs of the synagogue, by name Jairus, and having seen Him, he falls at His feet,
22 Behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, came; and seeing him, he fell at his feet
23 and he was calling on Him much, saying, “My little daughter is at the last extremity—that having come, You may lay on her [Your] hands, so that she may be saved, and she will live”;
23 and begged him much, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Please come and lay your hands on her, that she may be made healthy, and live.”
24 and He went away with him. And there was following Him a great multitude, and they were thronging Him,
24 He went with him, and a great multitude followed him, and they pressed upon him on all sides.
25 and a certain woman, being with a flow of blood [for] twelve years,
25 A certain woman who had a discharge of blood for twelve years,
26 and having suffered many things under many physicians, and having spent all that she had, and having profited nothing, but rather having come to the worse,
26 and had suffered many things by many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather grew worse,
27 having heard about Jesus, having come in the multitude behind, she touched His garment,
27 having heard the things concerning Jesus, came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothes.
28 for she said, “If I may even touch His garments, I will be saved”;
28 For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be made well.”
29 and immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she knew in the body that she has been healed of the plague.
29 Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
30 And immediately Jesus having known in Himself that power had gone forth out of Him, having turned in the multitude, said, “Who touched My garments?”
30 Immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
30 καὶ εὐθέως ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐπιγνοὺς ἐν ἑαυτῷ τὴν ἐξ αὐτοῦ δύναμιν ἐξελθοῦσαν, ἐπιστραφεὶς ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ ἔλεγε· τίς μου ἥψατο τῶν ἱματίων;
31 And His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, Who touched Me!”
31 His disciples said to him, “You see the multitude pressing against you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’”
31 καὶ ἔλεγον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ· βλέπεις τὸν ὄχλον συνθλίβοντά σε, καὶ λέγεις τίς μου ἥψατο;
32 And He was looking around to see her who did this,
32 He looked around to see her who had done this thing.
33 and the woman, having been afraid, and trembling, knowing what was done on her, came, and fell down before Him, and told Him all the truth,
33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
34 and He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you; go away in peace, and be whole from your plague.”
34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be cured of your disease.”
35 As He is yet speaking, there come from the chief of the synagogue’s [house, certain], saying, “Your daughter died, why do you still harass the Teacher?”
35 While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue ruler’s house, saying, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher any more?”
35 Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἔρχονται ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀρχισυναγώγου λέγοντες ὅτι ἡ θυγάτηρ σου ἀπέθανε· τί ἔτι σκύλλεις τὸν διδάσκαλον;
36 And Jesus immediately, having heard the word that is spoken, says to the chief of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid, only believe.”
36 But Jesus, when he heard the message spoken, immediately said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Don’t be afraid, only believe.”
37 And He did not permit anyone to follow with Him, except Peter, and James, and John the brother of James;
37 He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
38 and He comes into the house of the chief of the synagogue, and sees a tumult, much weeping and wailing;
38 He came to the synagogue ruler’s house, and he saw an uproar, weeping, and great wailing.
39 and having gone in He says to them, “Why do you make a tumult, and weep? The child did not die, but sleeps”;
39 When he had entered in, he said to them, “Why do you make an uproar and weep? The child is not dead, but is asleep.”
40 and they were laughing at Him. And He, having put all forth, takes the father of the child, and the mother, and those with Him, and goes in where the child is lying,
40 They ridiculed him. But he, having put them all out, took the father of the child, her mother, and those who were with him, and went in where the child was lying.
41 and having taken the hand of the child, He says to her, “Talitha cumi”; which is, being interpreted, “Girl (I say to you), arise.”
41 Taking the child by the hand, he said to her, “Talitha cumi!” which means, being interpreted, “Girl, I tell you, get up!”
42 And immediately the girl arose, and was walking, for she was twelve years [old]; and they were amazed with a great amazement,
42 Immediately the girl rose up and walked, for she was twelve years old. They were amazed with great amazement.
43 and He charged them much, that no one may know this thing, and He said that there be given to her to eat.
43 He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and commanded that something should be given to her to eat.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 5:31 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters III–IV)

    For after she had been thus afflicted during twelve years, she was healed by the advent of the Saviour, when she had touched the border of His garment; and on this account the Saviour said, "Who touched me?" --teaching his disciples the mystery which had occurred among the Æons, and the healing of that Æon who had been involved in …

  3. Quotes verse 5:35 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXI)

    With this view He both walks more leisurely, and discourses more with the woman; that He might give time for the damsel to die, and for those to come, who told of it, and said, "Trouble not the Master." This again surely the evangelist obscurely signifies, when he saith, "While He yet spake, there came from the house certain which …
