1 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
1 Now there were some present at the same time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
2 And Jesus answering, said to them, Suppose ye that these Galileans were sinners above all the Galileans, because they suffered such things?
2 Jesus answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered such things?
3 I tell you, No; but except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
3 No, os digo; antes si no os arrepintiereis, todos pereceréis igualmente.
3 I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way.
4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?
4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the men who dwell in Jerusalem?
5 I tell you, No; but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
5 No, os digo; antes si no os arrepintiereis, todos pereceréis asimismo.
5 I tell you, no, but, unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way.”
6 He spoke also this parable: A certain [man] had a fig-tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit on it, and found none.
6 He spoke this parable. “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.
7 Then said he to the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig-tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?
7 He said to the vine dresser, ‘Behold, these three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and found none. Cut it down! Why does it waste the soil?’
8 And he answering, said to him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung [it] :
8 He answered, ‘Lord, leave it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it.
9 And if it shall bear fruit, [well] : and if not, [then] after that thou shalt cut it down.
9 If it bears fruit, fine; but if not, after that, you can cut it down.’”
10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
10 Y enseñaba en una sinagoga en sábado.
10 He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath day.
11 And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise raise [herself] .
11 Behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years. She was bent over and could in no way straighten herself up.
12 And when Jesus saw her, he called [her to him] , and said to her, Woman, thou art loosed from thy infirmity.
12 When Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your infirmity.”
13 And he laid [his] hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
13 He laid his hands on her, and immediately she stood up straight and glorified God.
14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, and said to the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath.
14 The ruler of the synagogue, being indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the multitude, “There are six days in which men ought to work. Therefore come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day!”
15 The Lord then answered him, and said, [Thou] hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or [his] ass from the stall, and lead [him] away to watering?
15 Therefore the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each one of you free his ox or his donkey from the stall on the Sabbath and lead him away to water?
16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, to be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?
16 Ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham whom Satan had bound eighteen long years, be freed from this bondage on the Sabbath day?”
17 And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.
17 As he said these things, all his adversaries were disappointed; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.
18 Then said he, To what is the kingdom of God like? and to what shall I resemble it?
18 He said, “What is God’s Kingdom like? To what shall I compare it?
19 It is like a grain of mustard-seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden, and it grew, and became a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.
19 It is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and put in his own garden. It grew and became a large tree, and the birds of the sky live in its branches.”
20 And again he said, To what shall I liken the kingdom of God?
20 Again he said, “To what shall I compare God’s Kingdom?
21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
21 It is like yeast, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.”
22 And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying towards Jerusalem.
22 He went on his way through cities and villages, teaching, and traveling on to Jerusalem.
23 Then said one to him, Lord, are there few that are saved? And he said to them,
23 One said to him, “Lord, are they few who are saved?” He said to them,
24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say to you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.
24 “Strive to enter in by the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will seek to enter in and will not be able.
25 When once the master of the house hath risen, and hath shut the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us; and he will answer and say to you, I know you not whence ye are:
25 When once the master of the house has risen up and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ then he will answer and tell you, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’
26 Then ye will begin to say, We have eaten and drank in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.
26 Entonces comenzaréis á decir: Delante de ti hemos comido y bebido, y en nuestras plazas enseñaste;
26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’
27 But he will say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are: depart from me, all [ye] workers of iniquity.
27 He will say, ‘I tell you, I don’t know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity.’
28 There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you [yourselves] excluded.
28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in God’s Kingdom, and yourselves being thrown outside.
29 And they will come from the east, and [from] the west, and from the north, and [from] the south, and will sit down in the kingdom of God.
29 They will come from the east, west, north, and south, and will sit down in God’s Kingdom.
30 And behold, there are last, who shall be first; and there are first who shall be last.
30 Behold, there are some who are last who will be first, and there are some who are first who will be last.”
31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying to him, Go out, and depart hence; for Herod will kill thee.
31 On that same day, some Pharisees came, saying to him, “Get out of here and go away, for Herod wants to kill you.”
32 And he said to them, Go ye and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out demons, and I do cures to-day and to-morrow, and the third [day] I shall be perfected.
32 He said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I complete my mission.
33 Nevertheless, I must walk to-day and to-morrow, and the [day] following: for it cannot be that a prophet should perish out of Jerusalem.
33 Nevertheless I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the next day, for it can’t be that a prophet would perish outside of Jerusalem.’
34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent to thee; how often would I have gathered thy children, as a hen [gathereth] her brood under [her] wings, and ye would not!
34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, like a hen gathers her own brood under her wings, and you refused!
35 Behold, your house is left to you desolate. And verily I say to you, ye shall not see me, until [the time shall] come when ye shall say, Blessed [is] he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
35 Behold, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 13:6 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LX)

Touching "the fig-tree" which had its three years' trial, and bare no fruit, and "the woman which was in an infirmity eighteen years," hearken to what the Lord may grant me to say. The fig-tree is the human race. And the three years are the three times; one before the Law, the second under the Law, the third under grace.

"The Kingdom of Heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, until the whole was leavened." For as this converts the large quantity of meal into its own quality, even so shall ye convert the whole world.
