WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 Woe, spoiler! and thou not spoiled, And treacherous! and they dealt not treacherously with thee, When thou dost finish, O spoiler, thou art spoiled, When thou dost finish dealing treacherously, They deal treacherously with thee.
1 Woe to you who destroy, but you weren’t destroyed, and who betray, but nobody betrayed you! When you have finished destroying, you will be destroyed; and when you have finished betrayal, you will be betrayed.
2 O Jehovah, favour us, for thee we have waited, Be their arm, in the mornings, Yea, our salvation in time of adversity.
2 Yahweh, be gracious to us. We have waited for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble.
3 From the voice of a multitude fled have peoples, From thine exaltation scattered have been nations.
3 At the noise of the thunder, the peoples have fled. When you lift yourself up, the nations are scattered.
4 And gathered hath been your spoil, A gathering of the caterpillar, As a running to and fro of locusts is he running on it.
4 Your plunder will be gathered as the caterpillar gathers. Men will leap on it as locusts leap.
5 Set on high is Jehovah, for He is dwelling on high, He filled Zion [with] judgment and righteousness,
5 Yahweh is exalted, for he dwells on high. He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
6 And hath been the stedfastness of thy times, The strength of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge, Fear of Jehovah — it [is] His treasure.
6 There will be stability in your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. The fear of Yahweh is your treasure.
7 Lo, 'Their Ariel,' they have cried without, Messengers of peace do weep bitterly.
7 Behold, their valiant ones cry outside; the ambassadors of peace weep bitterly.
8 Desolated have been highways, Ceased hath he who passeth along the path, He hath broken covenant, He hath despised enemies, He hath not esteemed a man.
8 The highways are desolate. The traveling man ceases. The covenant is broken. He has despised the cities. He doesn’t respect man.
9 Mourned, languished hath the land, Confounded hath been Lebanon, Withered hath been Sharon as a wilderness, And shaking are Bashan and Carmel.
9 The land mourns and languishes. Lebanon is confounded and withers away. Sharon is like a desert, and Bashan and Carmel are stripped bare.
10 Now, do I arise, saith Jehovah, Now I am exalted, now I am lifted up.
10 Ahora me levantaré, dice Jehová; ahora seré ensalzado, ahora seré engrandecido.
10 “Now I will arise,” says Yahweh. “Now I will lift myself up. Now I will be exalted.
11 Ye conceive chaff, ye bear stubble, Your spirit! — fire devoureth you.
11 You will conceive chaff. You will give birth to stubble. Your breath is a fire that will devour you.
12 And peoples have been [as] burnings of lime, Thorns, as sweepings, with fire they burn.
12 The peoples will be like the burning of lime, like thorns that are cut down and burned in the fire.
13 Hear, ye far off, that which I have done, And know, ye near ones, My might.
13 Hear, you who are far off, what I have done; and, you who are near, acknowledge my might.”
14 Afraid in Zion have been sinners, Seized hath trembling the profane: Who doth dwell for us — consuming fire, Who doth dwell for us — burnings of the age?
14 The sinners in Zion are afraid. Trembling has seized the godless ones. Who among us can live with the devouring fire? Who among us can live with everlasting burning?
15 Whoso is walking righteously, And is speaking uprightly, Kicking against gain of oppressions, Shaking his hands from taking hold on a bribe, Stopping his ear from hearing of blood, And shutting his eyes from looking on evil,
15 He who walks righteously and speaks blamelessly, he who despises the gain of oppressions, who gestures with his hands, refusing to take a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes from looking at evil—
16 He high places doth inhabit, Strongholds of rock [are] his high tower, His bread hath been given, his waters stedfast.
16 he will dwell on high. His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks. His bread will be supplied. His waters will be sure.
17 A king in his beauty, see do thine eyes, They see a land afar off.
17 Your eyes will see the king in his beauty. They will see a distant land.
18 Thy heart doth meditate terror, Where [is] he who is counting? Where [is] he who is weighing? Where [is] he who is counting the towers?
18 Your heart will meditate on the terror. Where is he who counted? Where is he who weighed? Where is he who counted the towers?
19 The strong people thou seest not, A people deeper of lip than to be understood, Of a scorned tongue, there is no understanding.
19 You will no longer see the fierce people, a people of a deep speech that you can’t comprehend, with a strange language that you can’t understand.
20 See Zion, the city of our meetings, Thine eyes see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, A tent not taken down, Not removed are its pins for ever, And none of its cords are broken.
20 Look at Zion, the city of our appointed festivals. Your eyes will see Jerusalem, a quiet habitation, a tent that won’t be removed. Its stakes will never be plucked up, nor will any of its cords be broken.
21 But there mighty [is] Jehovah for us, A place of rivers — streams broad of sides, No ship with oars doth go into it, And a mighty ship doth not pass over it.
21 But there Yahweh will be with us in majesty, a place of wide rivers and streams, in which no galley with oars will go, neither will any gallant ship pass by there.
22 For Jehovah our judge, Jehovah our lawgiver, Jehovah our king — He doth save us.
22 For Yahweh is our judge. Yahweh is our lawgiver. Yahweh is our king. He will save us.
23 Left have been thy ropes, They strengthen not rightly their mast, They have not spread out a sail, Then apportioned hath been a prey of much spoil, The lame have taken spoil.
23 Your rigging is untied. They couldn’t strengthen the foot of their mast. They couldn’t spread the sail. Then the prey of a great plunder was divided. The lame took the prey.
24 Nor doth an inhabitant say, 'I was sick,' The people that is dwelling in it, is forgiven of iniquity!
24 The inhabitant won’t say, “I am sick.” The people who dwell therein will be forgiven their iniquity.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 33:20 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter XVII)

… them because He loves them, and will spare them: He will Himself set them free." And that He should Himself become very man, visible, when He should be the Word giving salvation, Isaiah again says: "Behold, city of Zion: thine eyes shall see our salvation." And that it was not a mere man who died for us, Isaiah says: "And …
