Notes on this text (1)
YLT Young's Literal Translation
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 A Psalm of David. Ascribe to Jehovah, ye sons of the mighty, Ascribe to Jehovah honour and strength.
1 A Psalm by David. Ascribe to Yahweh, you sons of the mighty, ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to Jehovah the honour of His name, Bow yourselves to Jehovah, In the beauty of holiness.
2 Ascribe to Yahweh the glory due to his name. Worship Yahweh in holy array.
3 The voice of Jehovah [is] on the waters, The God of glory hath thundered, Jehovah [is] on many waters.
3 Yahweh’s voice is on the waters. The God of glory thunders, even Yahweh on many waters.
4 The voice of Jehovah [is] with power, The voice of Jehovah [is] with majesty,
4 Yahweh’s voice is powerful. Yahweh’s voice is full of majesty.
5 The voice of Jehovah [is] shivering cedars, Yea, Jehovah shivers the cedars of Lebanon.
5 Yahweh’s voice breaks the cedars. Yes, Yahweh breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6 And He causeth them to skip as a calf, Lebanon and Sirion as a son of Reems,
6 He makes them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young, wild ox.
7 The voice of Jehovah is hewing fiery flames,
7 Yahweh’s voice strikes with flashes of lightning.
8 The voice of Jehovah paineth a wilderness, Jehovah paineth the wilderness of Kadesh.
8 Yahweh’s voice shakes the wilderness. Yahweh shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
9 The voice of Jehovah paineth the oaks, And maketh bare the forests, And in His temple every one saith, 'Glory.'
9 Yahweh’s voice makes the deer calve, and strips the forests bare. In his temple everything says, “Glory!”
10 Jehovah on the deluge hath sat, And Jehovah sitteth king — to the age,
10 Yahweh sat enthroned at the Flood. Yes, Yahweh sits as King forever.
11 Jehovah strength to his people giveth, Jehovah blesseth His people with peace!
11 Yahweh will give strength to his people. Yahweh will bless his people with peace.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XXVIII)

It is the Voice of the Mediator Himself, strong of hand in the conflict of the Passion. Now what He seems to wish for against His enemies, is not the wish of malevolence, but the declaration of their punishment; as in the Gospel, with the cities, in which though He had performed miracles, yet they had not believed on Him, …

  2. Quotes verse 29:5 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book VIII)

For he was fearful of offending his friends, proud demon-worshippers, from the height of whose Babylonian dignity, as from cedars of Lebanon which had not yet been broken by the Lord, he thought a storm of enmity would descend upon him.

  3. Quotes verse 29:7 Basil of Caesarea, Hexaemeron (Homily VI)

It is that which the Psalmist affirms in saying "The voice of the Lord divideth the flames of fire." Thus, in the requital which awaits us after this life, a mysterious voice seems to tell us that the double nature of fire will be divided; the just will enjoy its light, and the torment of its heat will be the …

  4. Quotes verse 29:5 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book IX)

For he rather desired that they should savour of the "cedars" of the schools, which the Lord hath now broken down, than of the wholesome herbs of the Church, hostile to serpents.
