LXXUP Updated Brenton English Septuagint
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 Alleluia. Blessed is the man that fears the Lord: He will delight greatly in his commandments.
112:1 Aleluya.
2 His seed shall be mighty in the earth: The generation of the upright shall be blessed.
3 Glory and riches shall be in his house; And his righteousness endures for evermore.
4 To the upright light has sprung up in darkness: He is pitiful, and merciful, and righteous.
5 The good man is he that pities and lends: He will direct his affairs with judgment.
6 For he shall not be moved forever; The righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
7 He shall not be afraid of [any] evil report: His heart is ready to trust in the Lord.
8 His heart is established, he shall not fear, Till he shall see [his desire] upon his enemies.
9 He has dispersed abroad; he has given to the poor; His righteousness endures for evermore: His horn shall be exalted with honor.
10 The sinner shall see and be angry, He shall gnash his teeth, and consume away: The desire of the sinner shall perish.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 112.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXI)

The days have come for us to sing Allelujah....Now these days come only to pass away, and pass away to come, again, and typify the day which does not come and pass away, because it is neither preceded by yesterday to cause it to come, nor pressed upon by the morrow to cause it to pass....For as these days succeed …
