1 For the end, [a Psalm] of David upon Mahalath, of instruction. 2 The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They have corrupted [themselves], and become abominable in iniquities: There is none that does good. 3 God looked down from heaven upon the sons of men, To see if there were any that understood, or sought after God. 4 They have all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; There is none that does good, there is not even one. 5 Will none of the workers of iniquity know, Who devour my people as they would eat bread? They have not called upon God. There were they greatly afraid, where there was no fear: 6 For God has scattered the bones of the men pleasers; They were ashamed, for God despised them. 7 Who will bring the salvation of Israel out of Zion? When the Lord turns the captivity of his people, Jacob shall exult, and Israel shall be glad.

What the Fathers said
Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 53.
How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
The title of the Psalm hath: "At the end, understanding of David, when there came Doeg the Edomite and told Saul, David hath come into the house of Abimelech:" whereas we read that he had come into the house of Achimelech.
