Notes on this text (2)

1 For the end, a Psalm of David. 2 The Lord hear thee in the day of trouble; The name of the God of Jacob defend thee. 3 Send thee help from the sanctuary, And aid thee out of Zion. 4 Remember all thy sacrifice, And enrich thy whole burnt offering. Pause. 5 Grant thee according to thy heart, And fulfill all thy desire. 6 We will exult in thy salvation, And in the name of our God shall we be magnified: The Lord fulfill all thy petitions. 7 Now I know that the Lord has saved his Christ: He shall hear him from his holy heaven: The salvation of his right hand is mighty. 8 Some [glory] in chariots, and some in horses: But we will glory in the name of the Lord our God. 9 They are overthrown and fallen: But we are risen, and have been set upright. 10 O Lord, save the king: And hear us in whatever day we call upon thee.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 20.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XIX)

It is a well-known title; nor does the Lord Jesus Christ say what follows, but it is said of Him. 2. "The heavens tell out the glory of God" (ver. 1).
