1 For the end, [a Psalm] of David, for alternate [strains].

2 Save me, O God; for the waters have come in to my soul.
69:1 For the Chief Musician. To the tune of “Lilies.” By David. Save me, God, for the waters have come up to my neck!
3 I am stuck fast in deep mire, and there is no standing: I am come in to the depths of the sea, and a storm has overwhelmed me.
69:2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold. I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
4 I am weary [of] crying, my throat has become hoarse; Mine eyes have failed by my waiting on my God.
69:3 I am weary with my crying. My throat is dry. My eyes fail looking for my God.
5 They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head: My enemies that persecute me unrighteously are strengthened: Then I restored that which I took not away.
69:4 Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head. Those who want to cut me off, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty. I have to restore what I didn’t take away.
6 O God, thou knowest my foolishness; And my transgressions are not hidden from thee.
69:5 Dios, tú sabes mi locura; y mis delitos no te son ocultos.
69:5 God, you know my foolishness. My sins aren’t hidden from you.
7 Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord of hosts, be ashamed on my account: let not them that seek thee, be ashamed on my account, O God of Israel.
69:6 Don’t let those who wait for you be shamed through me, Lord Yahweh of Armies. Don’t let those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, God of Israel.
8 For I have suffered reproach for thy sake; Shame has covered my face.
69:7 Because for your sake, I have borne reproach. Shame has covered my face.
9 I became strange to my brethren, And a stranger to my mother’s children.
69:8 I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s children.
10 For the zeal of thy house has eaten me up; And the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.
69:9 For the zeal of your house consumes me. The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
11 And I bowed down my soul with fasting, And that was made my reproach.
69:10 When I wept and I fasted, that was to my reproach.
12 And I put on sackcloth for my covering; And I became a proverb to them.
69:11 Puse además saco por mi vestido; y vine á serles por proverbio.
69:11 When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.
13 They that sit in the gate talked against me, And they that drank wine sang against me.
69:12 Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards.
14 But I [will cry] to thee, O Lord, in my prayer; O God, it is a propitious time: in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, In the truth of thy salvation.
69:13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, Yahweh, in an acceptable time. God, in the abundance of your loving kindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation.
15 Save me from the mire, that I stick not [in it]: Let me be delivered from them that hate me, and from the deep waters.
69:14 Deliver me out of the mire, and don’t let me sink. Let me be delivered from those who hate me, and out of the deep waters.
16 Let not the waterflood drown me, Nor let the deep swallow me up; Neither let the well shut its mouth upon me.
69:15 Don’t let the flood waters overwhelm me, neither let the deep swallow me up. Don’t let the pit shut its mouth on me.
17 Hear me, O Lord; for thy mercy is good: According to the multitude of thy compassions look upon me.
69:16 Answer me, Yahweh, for your loving kindness is good. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, turn to me.
18 And turn not away thy face from thy servant; For I am afflicted: hear me speedily.
69:17 Don’t hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me speedily!
19 Draw nigh to my soul and redeem it: Deliver me because of mine enemies.
69:18 Draw near to my soul and redeem it. Ransom me because of my enemies.
20 For thou knowest my reproach, And my shame, and my confusion; All that afflict me are before thee.
69:19 You know my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor. My adversaries are all before you.
21 My soul has waited for reproach and misery; And I waited for one to grieve with me, but there was none; And for one to comfort me, but I found none.
69:20 Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness. I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; for comforters, but I found none.
22 They gave [me] also gall for my food, And made me drink vinegar for my thirst.
69:21 They also gave me poison for my food. In my thirst, they gave me vinegar to drink.
23 Let their table before them be for a snare, And for a recompense, and for a stumbling block.
69:22 Let their table before them become a snare. May it become a retribution and a trap.
24 Let their eyes be darkened that they should not see; And bow down their back continually.
69:23 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they can’t see. Let their backs be continually bent.
25 Pour out thy wrath upon them, And let the fury of thine anger take hold on them.
69:24 Pour out your indignation on them. Let the fierceness of your anger overtake them.
26 Let their habitation be made desolate; And let there be no inhabitant in their tents:
69:25 Let their habitation be desolate. Let no one dwell in their tents.
27 Because they persecuted him whom thou hast smitten; And they have added to the grief of my wounds.
69:26 For they persecute him whom you have wounded. They tell of the sorrow of those whom you have hurt.
28 Add iniquity to their iniquity; And let them not come into thy righteousness.
69:27 Charge them with crime upon crime. Don’t let them come into your righteousness.
29 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, And let them not be written with the righteous.
69:28 Let them be blotted out of the book of life, and not be written with the righteous.
30 I am poor and sorrowful; But the salvation of thy countenance has helped me.
69:29 Y yo afligido y dolorido, tu salud, oh Dios, me defenderá.
69:29 But I am in pain and distress. Let your salvation, God, protect me.
31 I will praise the name of my God with a song, I will magnify him with praise;
69:30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
32 And [this] shall please God more than a young calf Having horns and hoofs.
69:31 It will please Yahweh better than an ox, or a bull that has horns and hoofs.
33 Let the poor see and rejoice; Seek the Lord diligently, and ye shall live.
69:32 The humble have seen it, and are glad. You who seek after God, let your heart live.
34 For the Lord hears the poor, And does not set at nought his fettered ones.
69:33 For Yahweh hears the needy, and doesn’t despise his captive people.
35 Let the heavens and the earth praise him, The sea, and all things moving in them.
69:34 Let heaven and earth praise him; the seas, and everything that moves therein!
36 For God will save Zion, And the cities of Judea shall be built; And [men] shall dwell there, and inherit it.
69:35 For God will save Zion, and build the cities of Judah. They shall settle there, and own it.
37 And the seed of his servants shall possess it, And they that love his name shall dwell therein.
69:36 The children also of his servants shall inherit it. Those who love his name shall dwell therein.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 69.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXVIII)

Of this Psalm, the title seemeth not to need operose discussion: for simple and easy it appeareth. For thus it standeth: "For the end, for David himself a Psalm of a Song." But in many Psalms already we have reminded you what is "at the end: for the end of the Law is Christ for righteousness to every man believing:" …

For, says the elect David, "I will confess unto the Lord; and that will please Him more than a young bullock that hath horns and hoofs. Let the poor see it, and be glad." And again he saith, "Offer unto God the sacrifice of praise, and pay thy vows unto the Most High.
