1 A Prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, thou hast been our refuge in all generations.
90:1 A Prayer by Moses, the man of God. Lord, you have been our dwelling place for all generations.
2 Before the mountains existed, And [before] the earth and the world were formed, Even from age to age, thou art.
90:2 Before the mountains were born, before you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.
3 Turn not man back to [his] low place, Whereas thou saidst, Return, ye sons of men?
90:3 You turn man to destruction, saying, “Return, you children of men.”
4 For a thousand years in thy sight are As the yesterday which is past, And as a watch in the night.
90:4 For a thousand years in your sight are just like yesterday when it is past, like a watch in the night.
5 Years shall be vanity to them: Let the morning pass away as grass.
90:5 You sweep them away as they sleep. In the morning they sprout like new grass.
6 In the morning let it flower, and pass away: In the evening let it droop, let it be withered and dried up.
90:6 In the morning it sprouts and springs up. By evening, it is withered and dry.
7 For we have perished in thine anger, And in thy wrath we have been troubled.
90:7 For we are consumed in your anger. We are troubled in your wrath.
8 Thou hast set our transgressions before thee: Our age is in the light of thy countenance.
90:8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.
9 For all our days are gone, And we have passed away in thy wrath: Our years have spun out their tale as a spider.
90:9 For all our days have passed away in your wrath. We bring our years to an end as a sigh.
10 [As for] the days of our years, in them are seventy years; And if [men should be] in strength, eighty years: And the greater part of them would be labor and trouble; For weakness overtakes us, and we shall be chastened.
90:10 The days of our years are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty years; yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for it passes quickly, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of thy wrath?
90:11 Who knows the power of your anger, your wrath according to the fear that is due to you?
12 And [who knows how] to number [his days] Because of the fear of thy wrath? So manifest thy right hand, And those that are instructed in wisdom in the heart.
90:12 So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
13 Return, O Lord, how long? And be entreated concerning thy servants.
90:13 Relent, Yahweh! How long? Have compassion on your servants!
14 We have been satisfied in the morning with thy mercy; And we did exult and rejoice:
90:14 Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Let us rejoice in all our days, In return for the days wherein thou didst afflict us, The years wherein we saw evil.
90:15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil.
16 And look upon thy servants, and upon thy works; And guide their children.
90:16 Let your work appear to your servants, your glory to their children.
17 And let the brightness of the Lord our God be upon us: And do thou direct for us the works of our hands.
90:17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us. Establish the work of our hands for us. Yes, establish the work of our hands.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 90.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXXIX)

Understand, beloved, this Psalm, which I am about to explain, by the grace of God, of our hope in the Lord Jesus Christ, and be of good cheer, because He who promised, will fulfil all, as He has fulfilled much: for it is not our own merit, but His mercy, that gives us confidence in Him.
