BSB Berean Standard Bible
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 This is a trustworthy saying: If anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble task.
1 PALABRA fiel: Si alguno apetece obispado, buena obra desea.
2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
2 Conviene, pues, que el obispo sea irreprensible, marido de una mujer, solícito, templado, compuesto, hospedador, apto para enseñar;
3 not dependent on wine, not violent but gentle, peaceable, and free of the love of money.
3 No amador del vino, no heridor, no codicioso de torpes ganancias, sino moderado, no litigioso, ajeno de avaricia;
4 An overseer must manage his own household well and keep his children under control, with complete dignity.
4 Que gobierne bien su casa, que tenga sus hijos en sujeción con toda honestidad;
5 For if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how can he care for the church of God?
6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same condemnation as the devil.
7 Furthermore, he must have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the snare of the devil.
8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued or given to much wine or greedy for money.
8 Los diáconos asimismo, [deben ser] honestos, no bilingües, no dados á mucho vino, no amadores de torpes ganancias;
9 They must hold to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.
10 Additionally, they must first be tested. Then, if they are above reproach, let them serve as deacons.
11 In the same way, the women must be dignified, not slanderers, but temperate and faithful in all things.
12 A deacon must be the husband of but one wife, a good manager of his children and of his own household.
13 For those who have served well as deacons acquire for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
14 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these things
15 in case I am delayed, so that you will know how each one must conduct himself in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.
16◆ By common confession, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was proclaimed among the nations, was believed in throughout the world, was taken up in glory.

Why does my Bible say something different?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 3:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on First Timothy (Homily X)

    As now proceeding to discourse of the Episcopal office, he sets out with showing what sort of a person a Bishop ought to be. And here he does not do it as in the course of his exhortation to Timothy, but addresses all, and instructs others through him. And what says he?

  2. Quotes verse 3:15 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter XI)

    For, since there are four zones of the world in which we live, and four principal winds, while the Church is scattered throughout all the world, and the "pillar and ground" of the Church is the Gospel and the spirit of life; it is fitting that she should have four pillars, breathing out immortality on every side, and vivifying men …

    It is to this the apostle refers when he says, "He that desireth the episcopate desireth a good work." He wished to show that the episcopate is the title of a work, not of an honor.

  4. Quotes verse 3:6 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XV)

    … which make havoc of the whole world, had their entering in from pride:--for both the devil, not being such before, did thus become a devil; as indeed Paul plainly declared, saying, "Lest being lifted up with pride, he fall into the condemnation of the devil:" --and the first man, too, puffed up by the devil with these hopes, was made …
