11 Восходѧ́щымъ же и҆̀мъ на восхо́дъ гра́да, и҆ сѐ, ѡ҆брѣто́ша дѣви́цъ и҆зше́дшихъ почерпстѝ воды̀, и҆ рѣ́ша и҆̀мъ: є҆́сть ли здѣ̀ прозорли́вецъ;
20 и҆ ѡ҆ ѻ҆слѧ́тѣхъ твои́хъ заблꙋди́вшихъ дне́сь тре́тїй де́нь, не помышлѧ́й въ се́рдцы свое́мъ ѡ҆ ни́хъ, и҆́бо ѡ҆брѣто́шасѧ: и҆ комꙋ̀ кра̑снаѧ і҆и҃лєва; не тебѣ́ ли и҆ до́мꙋ ѻ҆тца̀ твоегѡ̀;
21 И҆ ѿвѣща̀ саꙋ́лъ и҆ речѐ: не сы́нъ ли є҆́смь а҆́зъ мꙋ́жа і҆емїне́а, ме́ньшагѡ ски́птра пле́мене і҆и҃лева; и҆ пле́мене малѣ́йшагѡ ѿ всегѡ̀ ски́птра венїамі́нова; и҆ ѻ҆те́чество моѐ ме́ньшее па́че всѣ́хъ ѻ҆те́чествъ венїамі́новыхъ; и҆ вскꙋ́ю глаго́лалъ є҆сѝ ко мнѣ̀ по глаго́лꙋ семꙋ̀;
¿por qué pues me has dicho cosa semejante?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 9:22 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters XVIII–XIX)

And then the union of all these, which is called the Triacontad, they strenuously endeavour to demonstrate by the ark of Noah, the height of which was thirty cubits; by the case of Samuel, who assigned Saul the chief place among thirty guests; by David, when for thirty days he concealed himself in the field; by those who entered along …

And as for Samuel and David, we have it plainly in the Books of the Kingdoms, how by the Holy Ghost they prophesied themselves, and were rulers of the prophets;--and Samuel was called the Seer; and David says distinctly, The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and in the Psalms, And take not thy Holy Spirit from me, …
