1 A beše jedan čovek od plemena Venijaminovog, kome ime beše Kis, sin Avila, sina Serora, sina Vehorata, sina Afije, sina jednog čoveka od plemena Venijaminovog, hrabar junak.
10 I Saul reče momku svom: Dobro veliš; hajde da idemo. I pođoše u grad gde beše čovek Božji.
13 Kako uđete u grad, naći ćete ga pre nego pođe na goru da jede; jer narod neće jesti dokle on ne dođe, jer on treba da blagoslovi žrtvu, pa onda će zvanice jesti; zato idite, jer ćete ga sada naći.
14 I otidoše u grad; a kad dođoše usred grada, gle Samuilo polazeći na goru srete ih.
15 A Gospod beše objavio Samuilu dan pre nego dođe Saul, rekavši:
16 Sutra u ovo doba poslaću k tebi jednog čoveka iz zemlje Venijaminove, njega pomaži da bude vođ narodu mom Izrailju, i on će izbaviti moj narod iz ruku filistejskih. Jer pogledah na narod svoj, jer vika njegova dođe do mene.
17 I kad Samuilo ugleda Saula, reče mu Gospod: Eto čoveka za kog ti rekoh; taj će vladati mojim narodom.
19 A Samuilo odgovori Saulu i reče: Ja sam videlac.
21 A Saul odgovori i reče: Nisam li od plemena Venijaminovog, najmanjeg plemena Izrailjevog, i dom moj najmanji između svih domova plemena Venijaminovog?
¿por qué pues me has dicho cosa semejante?
22 A Samuilo uze Saula i njegovog momka, i odvede ih u sobu, i posadi ih u začelje među zvanicama kojih beše do trideset ljudi.
I kad se diže Saul, iziđoše obojica, on i Samuilo.
27 I kad dođoše na kraj grada, reče Samuilo Saulu: Reci momku neka ide napred (i on prođe napred), a ti stani malo da ti javim reč Božiju.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

And then the union of all these, which is called the Triacontad, they strenuously endeavour to demonstrate by the ark of Noah, the height of which was thirty cubits; by the case of Samuel, who assigned Saul the chief place among thirty guests; by David, when for thirty days he concealed himself in the field; by those who entered along …
