2 И҆ ѿвѣща́въ і҆и҃съ речѐ и҆̀мъ: мните́ ли, ꙗ҆́кѡ галїле́ане сі́и грѣ́шнѣйши па́че всѣ́хъ галїле́анъ бѧ́хꙋ, ꙗ҆́кѡ та́кѡ пострада́ша;
3 No, os digo; antes si no os arrepintiereis, todos pereceréis igualmente.
4 И҆лѝ ѻ҆́ни ѻ҆смьна́десѧте, на ни́хже падѐ сто́лпъ сїлѡа́мскїй и҆ побѝ и҆̀хъ, мните́ ли, ꙗ҆́кѡ ті́и до́лжнѣйши бѧ́хꙋ па́че всѣ́хъ живꙋ́щихъ во і҆ерⷭ҇ли́мѣ;
5 No, os digo; antes si no os arrepintiereis, todos pereceréis asimismo.
7 рече́ же къ вїнаре́ви: сѐ, тре́тїе лѣ́то, ѿне́лиже прихождꙋ̀ и҆щѧ̀ плода̀ на смоко́вницѣ се́й, и҆ не ѡ҆брѣта́ю: посѣцы̀ ю҆̀ (ᲂу҆̀бо), вскꙋ́ю и҆ зе́млю ᲂу҆пражнѧ́етъ;
10 Y enseñaba en una sinagoga en sábado.
15 Ѿвѣща́ (же) ᲂу҆̀бо є҆мꙋ̀ гдⷭ҇ь и҆ речѐ: лицемѣ́ре, ко́ждо ва́съ въ сꙋббѡ́тꙋ не ѿрѣша́етъ ли своего̀ вола̀ и҆лѝ ѻ҆сла̀ ѿ ꙗ҆́слїй, и҆ ве́дъ напаѧ́етъ;
16 сїю́ же дще́рь а҆враа́млю сꙋ́щꙋ, ю҆́же свѧза̀ сатана̀, сѐ, ѻ҆смоена́десѧте лѣ́то, не досто́ѧше ли разрѣши́тисѧ є҆́й ѿ ю҆́зы сеѧ̀ въ де́нь сꙋббѡ́тный;
18 Гл҃аше же: комꙋ̀ подо́бно є҆́сть црⷭ҇твїе бж҃їе; и҆ комꙋ̀ ᲂу҆подо́блю є҆̀;
20 Па́ки речѐ: комꙋ̀ ᲂу҆подо́блю црⷭ҇твїе бж҃їе;
26 Entonces comenzaréis á decir: Delante de ti hemos comido y bebido, y en nuestras plazas enseñaste;
34 І҆ерⷭли́ме, і҆ерⷭли́ме, и҆зби́вый прⷪ҇ро́ки и҆ ка́менїемъ побива́ѧ пѡ́сланныѧ къ тебѣ̀, колькра́ты восхотѣ́хъ собра́ти ча̑да твоѧ̑, ꙗ҆́коже ко́кошъ гнѣздо̀ своѐ под̾ крилѣ̑, и҆ не восхотѣ́сте;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 13:6 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LX)

    Touching "the fig-tree" which had its three years' trial, and bare no fruit, and "the woman which was in an infirmity eighteen years," hearken to what the Lord may grant me to say. The fig-tree is the human race. And the three years are the three times; one before the Law, the second under the Law, the third under grace.

  2. Quotes verse 13:16 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book II, Chapters XXIII–XXIV)

    another woman was also healed, after suffering in like manner for eighteen years; concerning whom the Lord said, "And ought not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound during eighteen years, to be set free on the Sabbath-day?" If, then, the former was a type of the twelfth Æon that suffered, the latter should also be a type of …

  4. Quotes verse 13:21 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XLVI)

    "The Kingdom of Heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, until the whole was leavened." For as this converts the large quantity of meal into its own quality, even so shall ye convert the whole world.

  5. Quotes verse 13:28 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Preface)

    … and shall recline with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven;" and then again by saying to the Jews, "When ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of heaven, but you yourselves cast out." This, then, is a clear point, that those who disallow his salvation, and frame the …
