WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon) PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition) 1 In those [times], the myriads of the crowd being gathered together, so that they trod one on another, he began to say to his disciples first, Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy; 1 Meanwhile, when a multitude of many thousands had gathered together, so much so that they trampled on each other, he began to tell his disciples first of all, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
2 but there is nothing covered up which shall not be revealed, nor secret that shall not be known; 2 But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.
3 therefore whatever ye have said in the darkness shall be heard in the light, and what ye have spoken in the ear in chambers shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. 3 Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light. What you have spoken in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.
4 But I say to you, my friends, Fear not those who kill the body and after this have no more that they can do. 4 “I tell you, my friends, don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
5 But I will shew you whom ye shall fear: Fear him who after he has killed has authority to cast into hell; yea, I say to you, Fear him. 5 But I will warn you whom you should fear. Fear him who after he has killed, has power to cast into Gehenna. Yes, I tell you, fear him.
6 Are not five sparrows sold for two assaria? and one of them is not forgotten before God. 6 “Aren’t five sparrows sold for two assaria coins? Not one of them is forgotten by God.
7 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore, ye are better than many sparrows. 7 But the very hairs of your head are all counted. Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.
8 But I say to you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, the Son of man will confess him also before the angels of God; 8 “I tell you, everyone who confesses me before men, the Son of Man will also confess before the angels of God;
9 but he that shall have denied me before men shall be denied before the angels of God; 9 but he who denies me in the presence of men will be denied in the presence of God’s angels.
10 and whoever shall say a word against the Son of man it shall be forgiven him; but to him that speaks injuriously against the Holy Spirit it shall not be forgiven. 10 Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but those who blaspheme against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
11 But when they bring you before the synagogues and rulers and the authorities, be not careful how or what ye shall answer, or what ye shall say; 11 When they bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, don’t be anxious how or what you will answer or what you will say;
12 for the Holy Spirit shall teach you in the hour itself what should be said. 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that same hour what you must say.”
13 And a person said to him out of the crowd, Teacher, speak to my brother to divide the inheritance with me. 13 One of the multitude said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 But he said to him, Man, who established me [as] a judge or a divider over you? 14 But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or an arbitrator over you?”
14 ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· ἄνθρωπε, τίς με κατέστησε δικαστὴν ἢ μεριστὴν ἐφ᾽ ὑμᾶς;
15 And he said to them, Take heed and keep yourselves from all covetousness, for [it is] not because a man is in abundance [that] his life is in his possessions. 15 He said to them, “Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man’s life doesn’t consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses.”
16 And he spoke a parable to them, saying, The land of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly. 16 He spoke a parable to them, saying, “The ground of a certain rich man produced abundantly.
17 And he reasoned within himself saying, What shall I do? for I have not [a place] where I shall lay up my fruits. 17 He reasoned within himself, saying, ‘What will I do, because I don’t have room to store my crops?’
17 καὶ διελογίζετο ἐν ἑαυτῷ λέγων· τί ποιήσω, ὅτι οὐκ ἔχω ποῦ συνάξω τοὺς καρπούς μου;
18 And he said, This will I do: I will take away my granaries and build greater, and there I will lay up all my produce and my good things; 18 He said, ‘This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
19 and I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much good things laid by for many years; repose thyself, eat, drink, be merry. 19 I will tell my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.”’
20 But God said to him, Fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; and whose shall be what thou hast prepared? 20 “But God said to him, ‘You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?’
20 εἶπε δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Θεός· ἄφρον, ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ τὴν ψυχήν σου ἀπαιτοῦσιν ἀπὸ σοῦ· ἃ δὲ ἡτοίμασας τίνι ἔσται;
21 Thus is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. 21 So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
22 And he said to his disciples, For this cause I say unto you, Be not careful for life, what ye shall eat, nor for the body, what ye shall put on. 22 He said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life, what you will eat, nor yet for your body, what you will wear.
23 The life is more than food, and the body than raiment. 23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.
23 οὐχὶ ἡ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστι τῆς τροφῆς καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος;
24 Consider the ravens, that they sow not nor reap; which have neither storehouse nor granary; and God feeds them. How much better are ye than the birds? 24 Consider the ravens: they don’t sow, they don’t reap, they have no warehouse or barn, and God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than birds!
24 κατανοήσατε τοὺς κόρακας, ὅτι οὐ σπείρουσιν οὐδὲ θερίζουσιν, οἷς οὐκ ἔστι ταμεῖον οὐδὲ ἀποθήκη, καὶ ὁ Θεὸς τρέφει αὐτούς· πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὑμεῖς διαφέρετε τῶν πετεινῶν;
25 But which of you by being careful can add to his stature one cubit? 25 Which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his height?
25 τίς δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν μεριμνῶν δύναται προσθεῖναι ἐπὶ τὴν ἡλικίαν αὐτοῦ πῆχυν ἕνα;
26 If therefore ye cannot [do] even what is least, why are ye careful about the rest? 26 If then you aren’t able to do even the least things, why are you anxious about the rest?
26 εἰ οὖν οὔτε ἐλάχιστον δύνασθε, τί περὶ τῶν λοιπῶν μεριμνᾶτε;
27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I say unto you, Not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed as one of these. 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow. They don’t toil, neither do they spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
28 But if God thus clothe the grass, which to-day is in the field and to-morrow is cast into [the] oven, how much rather you, O ye of little faith? 28 But if this is how God clothes the grass in the field, which today exists and tomorrow is cast into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith?
28 εἰ δὲ τὸν χόρτον τοῦ ἀγροῦ, σήμερον ὄντα καὶ αὔριον εἰς κλίβανον βαλλόμενον, ὁ Θεὸς οὕτως ἀμφιέννυσι, πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὑμᾶς, ὀλιγόπιστοι;
29 And ye, seek not what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink, and be not in anxiety; 29 “Don’t seek what you will eat or what you will drink; neither be anxious.
30 for all these things do the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that ye have need of these things; 30 For the nations of the world seek after all of these things, but your Father knows that you need these things.
31 but seek his kingdom, and [all] these things shall be added to you. 31 But seek God’s Kingdom, and all these things will be added to you.
32 Fear not, little flock, for it has been the good pleasure of your Father to give you the kingdom. 32 “Don’t be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.
33 Sell what ye possess and give alms; make to yourselves purses which do not grow old, a treasure which does not fail in the heavens, where thief does not draw near nor moth destroy. 33 Sell what you have and give gifts to the needy. Make for yourselves purses which don’t grow old, a treasure in the heavens that doesn’t fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.
34 For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
35 Let your loins be girded about, and lamps burning; 35 “Let your waist be dressed and your lamps burning.
36 and ye like men who wait their own lord whenever he may leave the wedding, that when he comes and knocks, they may open to him immediately. 36 Be like men watching for their lord when he returns from the wedding feast, that when he comes and knocks, they may immediately open to him.
37 Blessed are those bondmen whom the lord [on] coming shall find watching; verily I say unto you, that he will gird himself and make them recline at table, and coming up will serve them. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the lord will find watching when he comes. Most certainly I tell you that he will dress himself, make them recline, and will come and serve them.
38 And if he come in the second watch, and come in the third watch, and find [them] thus, blessed are those [bondmen]. 38 They will be blessed if he comes in the second or third watch and finds them so.
39 But this know, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be dug through. 39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into.
40 And ye therefore, be ye ready, for in the hour in which ye do not think [it], the Son of man comes. 40 Therefore be ready also, for the Son of Man is coming in an hour that you don’t expect him.”
41 And Peter said to him, Lord, sayest thou this parable to us, or also to all? 41 Peter said to him, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everybody?”
41 εἶπε δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Πέτρος· Κύριε, πρὸς ἡμᾶς τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην λέγεις ἢ καὶ πρὸς πάντας;
42 And the Lord said, Who then is the faithful and prudent steward, whom his lord will set over his household, to give the measure of corn in season? 42 The Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the right times?
42 εἶπε δὲ ὁ Κύριος· τίς ἄρα ἐστὶν ὁ πιστὸς οἰκονόμος καὶ φρόνιμος, ὃν καταστήσει ὁ κύριος ἐπὶ τῆς θεραπείας αὐτοῦ τοῦ διδόναι ἐν καιρῷ τὸ σιτομέτριον;
43 Blessed is that bondman whom his lord [on] coming shall find doing thus; 43 Blessed is that servant whom his lord will find doing so when he comes.
44 verily I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he has. 44 Truly I tell you that he will set him over all that he has.
45 But if that bondman should say in his heart, My lord delays to come, and begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and to drink and to be drunken, 45 But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My lord delays his coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and to be drunken,
46 the lord of that bondman shall come in a day when he does not expect it, and in an hour he knows not of, and shall cut him in two and appoint his portion with the unbelievers. 46 then the lord of that servant will come in a day when he isn’t expecting him and in an hour that he doesn’t know, and will cut him in two, and place his portion with the unfaithful.
47 But that bondman who knew his own lord's will, and had not prepared [himself] nor done his will, shall be beaten with many [stripes]; 47 That servant who knew his lord’s will, and didn’t prepare nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes,
48 but he who knew [it] not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few. And to every one to whom much has been given, much shall be required from him; and to whom [men] have committed much, they will ask from him the more. 48 but he who didn’t know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whomever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked.
49 I have come to cast a fire on the earth; and what will I if already it has been kindled? 49 “I came to throw fire on the earth. I wish it were already kindled.
50 But I have a baptism to be baptised with, and how am I straitened until it shall have been accomplished! 50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!
51 Think ye that I have come to give peace in the earth? Nay, I say to you, but rather division: 51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on the earth? I tell you, no, but rather division.
52 for from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided; three shall be divided against two, and two against three: 52 For from now on, there will be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
53 father against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against mother; a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 53 They will be divided, father against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against her mother; mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
54 And he said also to the crowds, When ye see a cloud rising out of the west, straightway ye say, A shower is coming; and so it happens. 54 He said to the multitudes also, “When you see a cloud rising from the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it happens.
55 And when [ye see] the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it happens. 55 When a south wind blows, you say, ‘There will be a scorching heat,’ and it happens.
56 Hypocrites, ye know how to judge of the appearance of the earth and of the heaven; how [is it then that] ye do not discern this time? 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but how is it that you don’t interpret this time?
56 ὑποκριταί, τὸ πρόσωπον τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τῆς γῆς οἴδατε δοκιμάζειν, τὸν δὲ καιρὸν τοῦτον πῶς οὐ δοκιμάζετε;
57 And why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? 57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?
57 τί δὲ καὶ ἀφ᾽ ἑαυτῶν οὐ κρίνετε τὸ δίκαιον;
58 For as thou goest with thine adverse party before a magistrate, strive in the way to be reconciled with him, lest he drag thee away to the judge, and the judge shall deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. 58 For when you are going with your adversary before the magistrate, try diligently on the way to be released from him, lest perhaps he drag you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.
59 I say unto thee, Thou shalt in no wise come out thence until thou hast paid the very last mite. 59 I tell you, you will by no means get out of there until you have paid the very last penny.”
