Notes on this text (1)

1 A Song of degrees. Out of the depths do I call upon thee, Jehovah. 2 Lord, hear my voice; let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication. 3 If thou, Jah, shouldest mark iniquities, Lord, who shall stand? 4 But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. 5 I wait for Jehovah; my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. 6 My soul [waiteth] for the Lord more than the watchers [wait] for the morning, [more than] the watchers for the morning. 7 Let Israel hope in Jehovah, because with Jehovah there is loving-kindness, and with him is plenteous redemption; 8 And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

The Psalm which we have sung is short: but as it is written in the Gospel of Zacchæus that he was "little of stature," but mighty in works; as it is written of that widow who cast two mites into the treasury, little was the money, but great was her charity; thus also this Psalm, if thou count the words, …
