Notes on this text (1)

1 A song of ascents. Out of the depths I cry to You, O LORD! 2 O Lord, hear my voice; let Your ears be attentive to my plea for mercy. 3 If You, O LORD, kept track of iniquities, then who, O Lord, could stand? 4 But with You there is forgiveness, so that You may be feared. 5 I wait for the LORD; my soul does wait, and in His word I put my hope. 6 My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning— more than watchmen wait for the morning. 7 O Israel, put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is loving devotion, and with Him is redemption in abundance. 8 And He will redeem Israel from all iniquity.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

The Psalm which we have sung is short: but as it is written in the Gospel of Zacchæus that he was "little of stature," but mighty in works; as it is written of that widow who cast two mites into the treasury, little was the money, but great was her charity; thus also this Psalm, if thou count the words, …
