1 A Psalme of David. Heare my prayer, O Lord, and hearken vnto my supplication: answer me in thy trueth and in thy righteousnes.
1 Salmo de David. OH Jehová, oye mi oración, escucha mis ruegos: respóndeme por tu verdad, por tu justicia.
1 A Psalm by David. Hear my prayer, Yahweh. Listen to my petitions. In your faithfulness and righteousness, relieve me.
2 (And enter not into iudgement with thy seruant: for in thy sight shall none that liueth, be iustified)
2 Don’t enter into judgment with your servant, for in your sight no man living is righteous.
3 For the enemie hath persecuted my soule: he hath smitten my life downe to the earth: he hath layde me in the darkenes, as they that haue bene dead long agoe:
3 Porque ha perseguido el enemigo mi alma; ha postrado en tierra mi vida; hame hecho habitar en tinieblas como los ya muertos.
3 For the enemy pursues my soul. He has struck my life down to the ground. He has made me live in dark places, as those who have been long dead.
4 And my spirit was in perplexitie in me, and mine heart within me was amased.
4 Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me. My heart within me is desolate.
5 Yet do I remember the time past: I meditate in all thy workes, yea, I doe meditate in the workes of thine hands.
5 I remember the days of old. I meditate on all your doings. I contemplate the work of your hands.
6 I stretche forth mine hands vnto thee: my soule desireth after thee, as the thirstie land. Selah.
(Selah.)
6 I spread out my hands to you. My soul thirsts for you, like a parched land. Selah.
7 Heare me spedely, O Lord, for my spirit faeleth: hide not thy face from me, els I shall be like vnto them that go downe into the pit.
7 Hurry to answer me, Yahweh. My spirit fails. Don’t hide your face from me, so that I don’t become like those who go down into the pit.
8 Let me heare thy louing kindenes in the morning, for in thee is my trust: shewe mee the waie, that I should walke in, for I lift vp my soule vnto thee.
8 Hazme oir por la mañana tu misericordia, porque en ti he confiado: hazme saber el camino por donde ande, porque á ti he alzado mi alma.
8 Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.
9 Deliuer me, O Lord, from mine enemies: for I hid me with thee.
9 Líbrame de mis enemigos, oh Jehová: á ti me acojo.
9 Deliver me, Yahweh, from my enemies. I flee to you to hide me.
10 Teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God: let thy good Spirit leade me vnto the land of righteousnes.
10 Enséñame á hacer tu voluntad, porque tú eres mi Dios: tu buen espíritu me guíe á tierra de rectitud.
10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.
11 Quicken me, O Lord, for thy Names sake, and for thy righteousnes bring my soule out of trouble.
11 Revive me, Yahweh, for your name’s sake. In your righteousness, bring my soul out of trouble.
12 And for thy mercy slay mine enemies, and destrie all them that oppresse my soule: for I am thy seruant.
12 In your loving kindness, cut off my enemies, and destroy all those who afflict my soul, for I am your servant.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXLII)

"With my voice have I cried unto the Lord" (ver. 1). It were enough to say, "with voice:" not for nothing perhaps has "my" been added. For many cry unto the Lord, not with their own voice, but with the voice of their body.

Forgive her, O Lord, forgive her, I beseech Thee; "enter not into judgment" with her.
