Notes on this text (2)

1 Praise ye the Lord. Praise, O ye seruants of the Lord, prayse the Name of the Lord. 2 Blessed be the Name of the Lord from hencefoorth and for euer. 3 The Lordes Name is praysed from the rising of ye sunne, vnto ye going downe of the same. 4 The Lord is high aboue all nations, and his glorie aboue the heauens. 5 Who is like vnto the Lord our God, that hath his dwelling on high! 6 Who abaseth himselfe to beholde things in the heauen and in the earth! 7 He raiseth the needie out of the dust, and lifteth vp the poore out of the dung, 8 That he may set him with the princes, euen with the princes of his people. 9 He maketh the barren woman to dwell with a familie, and a ioyfull mother of children. Prayse ye the Lord.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

I believe, brethren, that ye remarked and committed to memory the title of this Psalm. "The conversion," he saith, "of Haggai and Zechariah." These prophets were not as yet in existence, when these verses were sung....But both, the one within a year after the other, began to prophesy that which seemeth to pertain to the restoration of the temple, as …

In itself, indeed, the glory of the Father could neither be diminished nor enlarged; but without any doubt it was less among men when God was known only in Judea: and as yet children praised not the name of the Lord from the rising of the sun to its going down.
