Notes on this text (2)

1 Praise ye the Lord. Blessed is the man, that feareth the Lord, and deliteth greatly in his commandements. 2 His seede shall be mightie vpon earth: the generation of the righteous shall be blessed. 3 Riches and treasures shalbe in his house, and his righteousnesse endureth for euer. 4 Vnto the righteous ariseth light in darkenes: he is merciful and full of copassion and righteous. 5 A good man is mercifull and lendeth, and will measure his affaires by iudgement. 6 Surely he shall neuer be moued: but the righteous shalbe had in euerlasting remembrance. 7 He will not be afraide of euill tidings: for his heart is fixed, and beleeueth in the Lord. 8 His heart is stablished: therefore he will not feare, vntill he see his desire vpon his enemies. 9 He hath distributed and giuen to ye poore: his righteousnesse remaineth for euer: his horne shalbe exalted with glory. 10 The wicked shall see it and be angrie: he shall gnash with his teeth, and consume away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

The days have come for us to sing Allelujah....Now these days come only to pass away, and pass away to come, again, and typify the day which does not come and pass away, because it is neither preceded by yesterday to cause it to come, nor pressed upon by the morrow to cause it to pass....For as these days succeed …
