1 To him that excelleth upon Shushan Eduth, or Michtam. A Psalme of David to teach. When he fought against Aram Naharaim, and against Aram Zobah, when Joab returned and slew twelve thousand Edomites in the salt valley. O God, thou hast cast vs out, thou hast scattered vs, thou hast bene angry, turne againe vnto vs.
OH Dios, tú nos has desechado, nos disipaste; te has airado: vuélvete á nosotros.
1 For the Chief Musician. To the tune of “The Lily of the Covenant.” A teaching poem by David, when he fought with Aram Naharaim and with Aram Zobah, and Joab returned, and killed twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt. God, you have rejected us. You have broken us down. You have been angry. Restore us, again.
2 Thou hast made the land to tremble, and hast made it to gape: heale the breaches thereof, for it is shaken.
2 You have made the land tremble. You have torn it. Mend its fractures, for it quakes.
3 Thou hast shewed thy people heauy things: thou hast made vs to drinke the wine of giddines.
3 Has hecho ver á tu pueblo duras cosas: hicístenos beber el vino de agitación.
3 You have shown your people hard things. You have made us drink the wine that makes us stagger.
4 But now thou hast giuen a banner to them that feare thee, that it may be displayed because of thy trueth. Selah.
(Selah.)
4 You have given a banner to those who fear you, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah.
5 That thy beloued may be deliuered, helpe with thy right hand and heare me.
5 So that your beloved may be delivered, save with your right hand, and answer us.
6 God hath spoken in his holines: therefore I will reioyce: I shall deuide Shechem, and measure the valley of Succoth.
6 God has spoken from his sanctuary: “I will triumph. I will divide Shechem, and measure out the valley of Succoth.
7 Gilead shalbe mine, and Manasseh shalbe mine: Ephraim also shalbe the strength of mine head: Iudah is my lawgiuer.
7 Mío es Galaad, y mío es Manasés; y Ephraim es la fortaleza de mi cabeza; Judá, mi legislador;
7 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine. Ephraim also is the defense of my head. Judah is my scepter.
8 Moab shalbe my wash pot: ouer Edom will I cast out my shoe: Palestina shew thy selfe ioyfull for me.
8 Moab is my wash basin. I will throw my sandal on Edom. I shout in triumph over Philistia.”
9 Who will leade me into the strong citie? who will bring me vnto Edom?
9 ¿Quién me llevará á la ciudad fortalecida? ¿quién me llevará hasta Idumea?
9 Who will bring me into the strong city? Who has led me to Edom?
10 Wilt not thou, O God, which hadest cast vs off, and didest not go forth, O God, with our armies?
10 Haven’t you, God, rejected us? You don’t go out with our armies, God.
11 Giue vs helpe against trouble: for vaine is the helpe of man.
11 Give us help against the adversary, for the help of man is vain.
12 Through God we shall doe valiantly: for he shall tread downe our enemies.
12 En Dios haremos proezas; y él hollará nuestros enemigos.
12 Through God we will do valiantly, for it is he who will tread down our adversaries.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LIX)

As the Scripture is wont to set mysteries of the Psalms on the titles, and to deck the brow of a Psalm with the high announcement of a Mystery, in order that we that are about to go in may know (when as it were upon the door-post we have read what within is doing) either of whom the house …

  2. Quotes verse 60:11 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXXIV)

But first passeth away the tribulation of this life, out of which He giveth us help, to whom we have said, "Give us help from tribulation." And all this life is indeed a tribulation to the understanding.
