JPS JPS Tanakh (1917)
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 (30-1) A Psalm; a Song at the Dedication of the House; of David. (30-2) I will extol thee, O LORD, for Thou hast raised me up, and hast not suffered mine enemies to rejoice over me.
1 A Psalm. A Song for the Dedication of the Temple. By David. I will extol you, Yahweh, for you have raised me up, and have not made my foes to rejoice over me.
2 (30-3) O LORD my God, I cried unto Thee, and Thou didst heal me;
2 Yahweh my God, I cried to you, and you have healed me.
3 (30-4) O LORD, Thou broughtest up my soul from the nether-world; Thou didst keep me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.
3 Yahweh, you have brought up my soul from Sheol. You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.
4 (30-5) Sing praise unto the LORD, O ye His godly ones, and give thanks to His holy name.
4 Sing praise to Yahweh, you saints of his. Give thanks to his holy name.
5 (30-6) For His anger is but for a moment, His favour is for a life-time; weeping may tarry for the night, but joy cometh in the morning.
5 For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.
6 (30-7) Now I had said in my security: 'I shall never be moved.'
6 As for me, I said in my prosperity, “I shall never be moved.”
7 (30-8) Thou hadst established, O LORD, in Thy favour my mountain as a stronghold — Thou didst hide Thy face; I was affrighted.
7 You, Yahweh, when you favored me, made my mountain stand strong; but when you hid your face, I was troubled.
8 (30-9) Unto Thee, O LORD, did I call, and unto the LORD I made supplication:
8 I cried to you, Yahweh. I made supplication to the Lord:
9 (30-10) 'What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise Thee? shall it declare Thy truth?
9 “What profit is there in my destruction, if I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise you? Shall it declare your truth?
10 (30-11) Hear, O LORD, and be gracious unto me; LORD, be Thou my helper.'
10 Hear, Yahweh, and have mercy on me. Yahweh, be my helper.”
11 (30-12) Thou didst turn for me my mourning into dancing; Thou didst loose my sackcloth, and gird me with gladness;
11 You have turned my mourning into dancing for me. You have removed my sackcloth, and clothed me with gladness,
12 (30-13) So that my glory may sing praise to Thee, and not be silent; O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto Thee for ever.
12 to the end that my heart may sing praise to you, and not be silent. Yahweh my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 30:11 Augustine of Hippo, Homilies on the First Epistle of John (Homily IX)

    "Thou hast turned for me my mourning into joy: Thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; to the end that my glory may sing to thee, and that I be not pricked." What is this, "That I be not pricked?" That there be not that which shall goad my conscience.
