1 A PSALM. A SONG OF THE DEDICATION OF THE HOUSE OF DAVID. I exalt You, O YHWH, || For You have drawn me up, || And have not let my enemies rejoice over me.
GLORIFICARTE he, oh Jehová; porque me has ensalzado, y no hiciste á mis enemigos alegrarse de mí.
1 A Psalm. A Song for the Dedication of the Temple. By David. I will extol you, Yahweh, for you have raised me up, and have not made my foes to rejoice over me.
2 My God YHWH, I have cried to You, || And You heal me.
2 Jehová Dios mío, á ti clamé, y me sanaste.
2 Yahweh my God, I cried to you, and you have healed me.
3 YHWH, You have brought up my soul from Sheol, || You have kept me alive, || From going down [to] the pit.
3 Yahweh, you have brought up my soul from Sheol. You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.
4 Sing praise to YHWH, you His saints, || And give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness,
4 Sing praise to Yahweh, you saints of his. Give thanks to his holy name.
5 For—a moment [is] in His anger, || Life [is] in His goodwill, || At evening remains weeping, and at morning singing.
5 For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.
6 And I have said in my ease, “I am not moved for all time.
6 Y dije yo en mi prosperidad: no seré jamás conmovido;
6 As for me, I said in my prosperity, “I shall never be moved.”
7 O YHWH, in Your good pleasure, || You have caused strength to remain for my mountain,” || You have hidden Your face—I have been troubled.
7 You, Yahweh, when you favored me, made my mountain stand strong; but when you hid your face, I was troubled.
8 To You, O YHWH, I call, || And to YHWH I make supplication.
8 A ti, oh Jehová, clamaré; y al Señor suplicaré.
8 I cried to you, Yahweh. I made supplication to the Lord:
9 “What gain [is] in my blood? In my going down to corruption? Does dust thank You? Does it declare Your truth?
9 “What profit is there in my destruction, if I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise you? Shall it declare your truth?
10 Hear, O YHWH, and favor me, O YHWH, be a helper to me.”
10 Hear, Yahweh, and have mercy on me. Yahweh, be my helper.”
11 You have turned my mourning to dancing for me, || You have loosed my sackcloth, || And gird me [with] joy.
11 You have turned my mourning into dancing for me. You have removed my sackcloth, and clothed me with gladness,
12 So that glory praises You, and is not silent, || O YHWH, my God, I thank You for all time!
12 Por tanto á ti cantaré, gloria [mía], y no estaré callado. Jehová Dios mío, te alabaré para siempre.
12 to the end that my heart may sing praise to you, and not be silent. Yahweh my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 30:11 Augustine of Hippo, Homilies on the First Epistle of John (Homily IX)

"Thou hast turned for me my mourning into joy: Thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; to the end that my glory may sing to thee, and that I be not pricked." What is this, "That I be not pricked?" That there be not that which shall goad my conscience.
