Notes on this text (1)

1 A SONG OF THE ASCENTS. BY DAVID. I have rejoiced in those saying to me, “We go to the house of YHWH.” 2 Our feet have been standing in your gates, O Jerusalem! 3 Jerusalem—the built one—[Is] as a city that is joined to itself together. 4 For there tribes have gone up, || Tribes of YAH, companies of Israel, || To give thanks to the Name of YHWH. 5 For there thrones of judgment have sat, || Thrones of the house of David. 6 Ask [for] the peace of Jerusalem, || Those loving you are at rest. 7 Peace is in your bulwark, rest in your high places, 8 For the sake of my brothers and my companions, || Please let me speak, “Peace [be] in you.” 9 For the sake of the house of our God YHWH, || I seek good for you!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
