1 Sing to YHWH a new song, || Sing to YHWH all the earth. 2 Sing to YHWH, bless His Name, || Proclaim His salvation from day to day. 3 Declare His glory among nations, || His wonders among all the peoples. 4 For YHWH [is] great, and greatly praised, || He [is] fearful over all gods. 5 For all the gods of the peoples [are] nothing, || And YHWH made the heavens. 6 Splendor and majesty [are] before Him, || Strength and beauty in His sanctuary. 7 Ascribe to YHWH, O families of the peoples, || Ascribe to YHWH glory and strength. 8 Ascribe to YHWH the glory of His Name, || Lift up a present and come into His courts. 9 Bow yourselves to YHWH, || In the honor of holiness, || Be afraid of His presence, all the earth. 10 Say among nations, “YHWH has reigned, || Also—the world is established, unmoved, || He judges the peoples in uprightness.” 11 The heavens rejoice, and the earth is joyful, || The sea and its fullness roar. 12 The field exults, and all that [is] in it, || Then all trees of the forest sing, 13 Before YHWH, for He has come, || For He has come to judge the earth. He judges the world in righteousness, || And the peoples in His faithfulness!

What the Fathers said
Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).
How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
As with David: "The gods of the heathen are idols of demons;" and, "Ye shall not follow other gods." For in that he says "the gods of the heathen"--but the heathen are ignorant of the true God--and calls them "other gods," he bars their claim [to be looked upon] as gods at all.
Not surely that Thou mightest know them through me, but that I may awaken my own love and that of my readers towards Thee, that we may all say, "Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised." I have already said, and shall say, for the love of Thy love do I this.

1. Rejoice, ye heavens, and let the earth be glad, for those who are to be sprinkled with hyssop, and cleansed with the spiritual hyssop, the power of Him to whom at His Passion drink was offered on hyssop and a reed.

So that when the divine Scripture saith, Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad, it is the angels in heaven and the men on earth that are invited to rejoice.

… the treasure new and old, the two covenants; the old, that giving of the law which took place formerly; and He points out as the new, that manner of life required by the Gospel, of which David says, "Sing unto the Lord a new song;" and Esaias, "Sing unto the Lord a new hymn.
