1 TO THE OVERSEER. [SET] TO “LILIES OF TESTIMONY.” A PSALM OF ASAPH. Shepherd of Israel, give ear, || Leading Joseph as a flock, || Inhabiting the cherubim—shine forth, 2 Before Ephraim, and Benjamin, and Manasseh, || Wake up Your might, and come for our salvation. 3 O God, cause us to turn back, || And cause Your face to shine, and we are saved. 4 YHWH, God of Hosts, until when? You have burned against the prayer of Your people. 5 You have caused them to eat bread of tears, || And cause them to drink || With tears a third time. 6 You make us a strife to our neighbors, || And our enemies mock at it. 7 God of Hosts, turn us back, || And cause Your face to shine, and we are saved. 8 You bring a vine out of Egypt, || You cast out nations, and plant it. 9 You have looked before it, and root it, || And it fills the land, 10 Hills have been covered [with] its shadow, || And its boughs [are] cedars of God. 11 It sends forth its branches to the sea, || And its shoots to the river. 12 Why have You broken down its hedges, || And everyone passing by the way has plucked it? 13 A boar out of the forest tears it, || And a wild beast of the fields grazes it. 14 God of Hosts, turn back, we implore You, || Look from the heavens, and see, and inspect this vine, 15 And the root that Your right hand planted, || And the branch You made strong for Yourself, 16 Burned with fire—cut down, || They perish from the rebuke of Your face. 17 Let Your hand be on the man of Your right hand || On the son of man You have strengthened for Yourself. 18 And we do not go back from You, || You revive us, and in Your Name we call. 19 O YHWH, God of Hosts, turn us back, || Cause Your face to shine, and we are saved!

What the Fathers said
Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).
How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
"O God, the Gentiles have come into Thine inheritance" (ver. 1). Under which form of expression other things which were to come to pass, are spoken of as having been done. Nor must this be wondered at, that these words are being spoken to God.

As also David says, when entreating His manifestation, "Thou that sittest between the cherubim, shine forth." For the cherubim, too, were four-faced, and their faces were images of the dispensation of the Son of God.
"Turn us again, O Lord God of Hosts, cause Thy face to shine; and we shall be saved." For whithersoever the soul of man turns itself, unless towards Thee, it is affixed to sorrows, yea, though it is affixed to beauteous things without Thee and without itself.

For indeed the Scripture is ever wont to call the law a hedge; as the prophet saith: "Thou hast broken down her hedge, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck off her grapes:" and, "I have set a hedge about it:" and Paul, "Having broken down the middle wall of the hedge." But others say, that …

… the Lord and guided them." And pray do not again understand by this guidance some humble service, for the Word witnesses that it was the work of God;--"Thou leddest thy people," it is said "like a flock," and "Thou that leadest Joseph like a flock," and "He led them on safely, so that they feared not." Thus when you hear …
