1 TO THE OVERSEER. A PSALM OF DAVID. I have diligently expected YHWH, || And He inclines to me, and hears my cry,
1 Al Músico principal: Salmo de David. RESIGNADAMENTE esperé á Jehová, é inclinóse á mí, y oyó mi clamor.
1 For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. I waited patiently for Yahweh. He turned to me, and heard my cry.
2 And He causes me to come up || From a pit of desolation—from mire of mud, || And He raises up my feet on a rock, || He is establishing my steps.
2 He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 And He puts a new song in my mouth, “Praise to our God.” Many see and fear, and trust in YHWH.
3 He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God. Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in Yahweh.
4 O the blessedness of the man || Who has made YHWH his trust, || And has not turned to the proud, || And those turning aside to lies.
4 Blessed is the man who makes Yahweh his trust, and doesn’t respect the proud, nor such as turn away to lies.
5 You have done much, my God YHWH; Your wonders and Your thoughts toward us, || There is none to arrange to You, || I declare and speak: They have been more than to be numbered.
5 Many, Yahweh, my God, are the wonderful works which you have done, and your thoughts which are toward us. They can’t be declared back to you. If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be counted.
6◆ Sacrifice and present You have not desired, || But a body You have prepared for me, || Burnt and sin-offering You have not asked.
6 Sacrificio y presente no te agrada; has abierto mis oídos; holocausto y expiación no has demandado.
6 Sacrifice and offering you didn’t desire. You have opened my ears. You have not required burnt offering and sin offering.
7 Then I said, “Behold, I have come, || In the roll of the scroll it is written of me,
7 Then I said, “Behold, I have come. It is written about me in the book in the scroll.
8 I have delighted to do Your pleasure, my God, || And Your law [is] within my heart.”
8 I delight to do your will, my God. Yes, your law is within my heart.”
9 I have proclaimed tidings of righteousness || In the great assembly, || Behold, I do not restrain my lips, || O YHWH, You have known.
9 Anunciado he justicia en grande congregación: he aquí no detuve mis labios, Jehová, tú [lo] sabes.
9 I have proclaimed glad news of righteousness in the great assembly. Behold, I will not seal my lips, Yahweh, you know.
10 I have not concealed Your righteousness || In the midst of my heart, || I have told of Your faithfulness and Your salvation, || I have not hidden Your kindness and Your truth, || To the great assembly.
10 I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart. I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation. I have not concealed your loving kindness and your truth from the great assembly.
11 You, O YHWH, do not restrain Your mercies from me, || Your kindness and Your truth continually keep me.
11 Tú, Jehová, no apartes de mí tus misericordias: tu misericordia y tu verdad me guarden siempre.
11 Don’t withhold your tender mercies from me, Yahweh. Let your loving kindness and your truth continually preserve me.
12 For innumerable evils have surrounded me, || My iniquities have overtaken me, || And I have not been able to see; They have been more than the hairs of my head, || And my heart has forsaken me.
12 For innumerable evils have surrounded me. My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up. They are more than the hairs of my head. My heart has failed me.
13 Be pleased, O YHWH, to deliver me, || O YHWH, make haste for my help.
13 Quieras, oh Jehová, librarme; Jehová, apresúrate á socorrerme.
13 Be pleased, Yahweh, to deliver me. Hurry to help me, Yahweh.
14 They are ashamed and confounded together, || Who are seeking my soul to destroy it, || They are turned backward, || And are ashamed, who are desiring my evil.
14 Let them be disappointed and confounded together who seek after my soul to destroy it. Let them be turned backward and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt.
15 They are desolate because of their shame, || Who are saying to me, “Aha, aha.”
15 Let them be desolate by reason of their shame that tell me, “Aha! Aha!”
16 All seeking You rejoice and are glad in You, || Those loving Your salvation continually say, “YHWH is magnified.”
16 Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you. Let such as love your salvation say continually, “Let Yahweh be exalted!”
17 And I [am] poor and needy, || The Lord devises for me. You [are] my help and my deliverer, O my God, do not linger.
17 Aunque afligido yo y necesitado, Jehová pensará de mí: mi ayuda y mi libertador eres tú; Dios mío, no te tardes.
17 But I am poor and needy. May the Lord think about me. You are my help and my deliverer. Don’t delay, my God.

Why does my Bible say something different?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

Behold, a ready obedience is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams." David also says: "Sacrifice and oblation Thou didst not desire, but mine ears hast Thou perfected; burnt-offerings also for sin Thou hast not required." He thus teaches them that God desires obedience, which renders them secure, rather than sacrifices and holocausts, which avail them …
