PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
4 y dijo: Pequé al entregar sangre inocente. Pero ellos dijeron: ¿Y a nosotros qué? ¡Allá tú!
13 τότε λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος· οὐκ ἀκούεις πόσα σου καταμαρτυροῦσι;
16 Entonces tenían un preso famoso llamado Barrabás.
17 συνηγμένων οὖν αὐτῶν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Πιλᾶτος· τίνα θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν; Βαραββᾶν ἢ Ἰησοῦν τὸν λεγόμενον Χριστόν;
18 Porque sabía que por envidia lo entregaron.
23 Él insistió: ¿Pues qué mal hizo? Pero ellos gritaban aún más: ¡Crucifíquenlo!
36 y sentados allí, lo vigilaban.
46 περὶ δὲ τὴν ἐνάτην ὥραν ἀνεβόησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγων· ἠλὶ ἠλί, λιμᾶ σαβαχθανί; τοῦτ᾽ ἔστι, Θεέ μου Θεέ μου, ἱνατί με ἐγκατέλιπες;
55 Muchas mujeres estaban allí quienes miraban desde lejos. Ellas seguían y servían a Jesús desde Galilea,
65 Pilato les dijo: Ustedes tienen una guardia. Vayan, asegúrenlo como saben.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

And as it were after such a feast and dainties in this way given to …

For as to their being aware of it, they say to Pilate, "That deceiver said," these are their words, "while He was yet alive, After three days I will rise again;" and yet we know His disciples were ignorant of this; even as they had been beforehand more void of understanding than these: wherefore also these became self-condemned.

  5. Quotes verse 27:51 Gregory of Nazianzus, Theological Orations (The Third Theological Oration)

He lays down His life, but He has power to take it again; and the veil is rent, for the mysterious doors of Heaven are opened; the rocks are cleft, the dead arise. He dies, but He gives life, and by His death destroys death.
