1 Wolde to god ye coulde suffre me a lytell in my folysshnes: yee and I praye you forbeare me.
1 OJALÁ toleraseis un poco mi locura; empero toleradme.
1 I wish that you would bear with me in a little foolishness, but indeed you do bear with me.
2 For I am gelous over you with godly gelousy. For I coupled you to one man to make you a chaste virgen to Christ.
2 For I am jealous over you with a godly jealousy. For I promised you in marriage to one husband, that I might present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
3 But I feare lest as the serpent begyled Eve thorow his sutteltie even so youre wittes shuld be corrupte from the singlenes that is in Christ.
3 But I am afraid that somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve in his craftiness, so your minds might be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
4 For if he that commeth preache another Iesus then hym whom we preached: or if ye receave another sprete then that which ye have receaved: other another gospell then that ye have receaved ye myght right wel have bene content.
4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we didn’t preach, or if you receive a different spirit which you didn’t receive, or a different “good news” which you didn’t accept, you put up with that well enough.
5 I suppose that I was not behynde the chefe apostles.
5 For I reckon that I am not at all behind the very best apostles.
6 Though I be rude in speakynge yet I am not so in knowledge. How be it amonge you we are knowen to the vtmost what we are in all thynges.
6 But though I am unskilled in speech, yet I am not unskilled in knowledge. No, in every way we have been revealed to you in all things.
7 Did I therin synne be cause I submitted my silfe that ye myght be exalted and because I preached to you the gospell of God fre?
7 Or did I commit a sin in humbling myself that you might be exalted, because I preached to you God’s Good News free of charge?
8 I robbed other congregacions and toke wages of the to do you service with all.
8 He despojado las otras iglesias, recibiendo salario para ministraros á vosotros.
8 I robbed other assemblies, taking wages from them that I might serve you.
9 And when I was present with yov and had nede I was greuous to no man for that which was lackynge vnto me the brethren which came from Macedonia supplied: and in all thynges I kept my silfe that I shuld not be greveous to you: and so will I kepe my silfe.
9 When I was present with you and was in need, I wasn’t a burden on anyone, for the brothers, when they came from Macedonia, supplied the measure of my need. In everything I kept myself from being burdensome to you, and I will continue to do so.
10 Yf the trueth of Christ be in me this ieioysynge shall not be taken from me in the regions of Achaia.
10 As the truth of Christ is in me, no one will stop me from this boasting in the regions of Achaia.
11 Wherfore? Be cause I love you not? God knoweth.
11 ¿Por qué? ¿porque no os amo? Dios lo sabe.
11 Why? Because I don’t love you? God knows.
12 Neverthe lesse what I doo that will I do to cut awaye occasion from them which desyre occasion that they myght be founde lyke vnto vs in that wherin they reioyce.
12 But what I do, that I will continue to do, that I may cut off opportunity from those who desire an opportunity, that in which they boast, they may be recognized just like us.
13 For these falce apostles are disceatefull workers and fassion them selves lyke vnto the apostles of Christ.
13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as Christ’s apostles.
14 And no marvayle for satan him silfe is chaunged into the fassion of an angell of light.
14 And no wonder, for even Satan masquerades as an angel of light.
15 Therfore it is no great thynge though his ministers fassion them selves as though they were the ministers of rightewesnes: whose ende shalbe acordynge to their dedes.
15 It is no great thing therefore if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.
16 I saye agayne lest eny man thynke that I am folishe: or els even now take me as a fole that I maye bost my silfe a lytell.
16 I say again, let no one think me foolish. But if so, yet receive me as foolish, that I also may boast a little.
17 That I speake I speake it not after the wayes of the lorde: but as it were folysshly whill we are now come to bostynge.
17 That which I speak, I don’t speak according to the Lord, but as in foolishness, in this confidence of boasting.
18 Seynge that many reioyce after the flesshe I will reioyce also.
18 Seeing that many boast after the flesh, I will also boast.
19 For ye suffre foles gladly be cause that ye youre selves are wyse.
19 For you bear with the foolish gladly, being wise.
20 For ye suffre even if a man brynge you into bondage: yf a man devoure: yf a man take: yf a man exalt hym silfe: yf a man smyte you on the face.
20 For you bear with a man if he brings you into bondage, if he devours you, if he takes you captive, if he exalts himself, or if he strikes you on the face.
21 I speake as concernynge rebuke as though we had bene weake. How be it wherin soever eny man dare be bolde (I speake folisshly) I dare be bolde also
21 To my shame, I speak as though we had been weak. Yet in whatever way anyone is bold (I speak in foolishness), I am bold also.
22 They are Ebrues so am I: They are Israelites even so am I. They are the seede of Abraham even so am I.
22 ¿Son Hebreos? yo también. ¿Son Israelitas? yo también. ¿Son simiente de Abraham? también yo.
22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the offspring of Abraham? So am I.
23 They are the ministers of Christ (I speake as a fole) I am moare: In labours moare aboundant: In strypes above measure: In preson more plenteously: In deeth ofte.
23 Are they servants of Christ? (I speak as one beside himself.) I am more so: in labors more abundantly, in prisons more abundantly, in stripes above measure, and in deaths often.
24 Of the Iewes five tymes receaved I every tyme .xl. strypes saue one.
24 Five times I received forty stripes minus one from the Jews.
25 Thryse was I beten with roddes. I was once stoned. I suffered thryse shipwracke. Nyght and daye have I bene in the depe of the see.
25 Tres veces he sido azotado con varas; una vez apedreado; tres veces he padecido naufragio; una noche y un día he estado en lo profundo [de la mar];
25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I suffered shipwreck. I have been a night and a day in the deep.
26 In iorneyinge often: In parels of waters: In parels of robbers: In ieoperdies of myne awne nacion: In ieoperdies amonge the hethen. I have bene in parels in cities in parels in wildernes in parels in the see in parels amonge falce brethren
26 En caminos muchas veces, peligros de ríos, peligros de ladrones, peligros de los de [mi] nación, peligros de los Gentiles, peligros en la ciudad, peligros en el desierto, peligros en la mar, peligros entre falsos hermanos;
26 I have been in travels often, perils of rivers, perils of robbers, perils from my countrymen, perils from the Gentiles, perils in the city, perils in the wilderness, perils in the sea, perils among false brothers;
27 in laboure and travayle in watchynge often in honger in thirst in fastynges often in colde and in nakednes.
27 En trabajo y fatiga, en muchas vigilias, en hambre y sed, en muchos ayunos, en frío y en desnudez;
27 in labor and travail, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, and in cold and nakedness.
28 And besyde the thynges which outwardly happen vnto me I am combred dayly and do care for all congregacions.
28 Besides those things that are outside, there is that which presses on me daily: anxiety for all the assemblies.
29 Who is sicke and I am not sicke? Who is hurte in the fayth and my hert burneth not?
29 ¿Quién enferma, y yo no enfermo? ¿Quién se escandaliza, y yo no me quemo?
29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is caused to stumble, and I don’t burn with indignation?
30 Yf I must nedes reioyce I will reioyce of myne infirmities.
30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that concern my weakness.
31 The God and father of oure lorde Iesus Christ which is blessed for evermore knoweth that I lye not
31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, he who is blessed forever more, knows that I don’t lie.
32 In the citie of Damascon the governer of the people vnder kynge Aretas layde watche in the citie of the Damasces and wolde have caught me
32 En Damasco, el gobernador de la provincia del rey Aretas guardaba la ciudad de los Damascenos para prenderme;
32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas guarded the Damascenes’ city, desiring to arrest me.
33 and at a wyndowe was I let doune in a basket thorowe the wall and so scaped his hondes.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 11:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Second Corinthians (Homily XXIII)

Being about to enter upon his own praises he uses much previous correction. And he does this not once or twice, although the necessity of the subject, and what he had often said, were sufficient excuse for him.

  2. Quotes verse 11:14 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book X, Chapters XLI–XLIII)

For the devil it was, transforming himself into an angel of light. And he much allured proud flesh, in that he had no fleshly body.

  3. Quotes verse 11:12 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXII)

Wherefore Paul also said, "That wherein they glory, they may be found even as we." But if when we are in a strange country, and are going unto persons unknown to us, we must seek nothing more than our food for the day, much more when abiding at home.

  4. Quotes verse 11:14 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture IV)

The devil also transfigures himself into an angel of light; not that he may reascend to where he was, for having made his heart hard as an anvil, he has henceforth a will that cannot repent; but in order that he may envelope those who are living an Angelic life in a mist of blindness, and a pestilent condition …

  5. Quotes verse 11:3 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book XIII, Chapters XII–XV)

… not in his own voice, doth he call on that other deep, for whom being jealous he feareth, lest that, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so their minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in our Bridegroom, Thine only Son. What a light of beauty will that be when "we shall see Him as He …
