10 I was in the sprete on a sondaye and herde behynde me a gret voyce as it had bene of a trompe
10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, like a trumpet
11 sayinge: I am Alpha and Omega the fyrst and the laste. That thou seist write in a boke and sende it vnto the congregacions which are in Asia vnto Ephesus and vnto Smyrna and vnto Pargamos and vnto Thiatira and vnto Sardis and vnto Philadelphia and vnto Laodicia.
11 saying, “What you see, write in a book and send to the seven assemblies: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.”
12 And I turned backe to se the voyce that spake to me. And when I was turned: I sawe .vii golde candelstyckes
12 Y me volví á ver la voz que hablaba conmigo: y vuelto, vi siete candeleros de oro;
12 I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. Having turned, I saw seven golden lamp stands.
13 and in the myddes of the candelstyckes one lyke vnto the sone of man clothed with a lynnen garmet doune to the ground and gyrd aboute the pappes with a golden gyrdle
13 And among the lamp stands was one like a son of man, clothed with a robe reaching down to his feet, and with a golden sash around his chest.
14 His heed and his heares were whyte as whyte woll and as snowe: and his eyes were as a flame of fyre:
14 Y su cabeza y sus cabellos eran blancos como la lana blanca, como la nieve; y sus ojos como llama de fuego;
14 His head and his hair were white as white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire.
15 and his fete lyke vnto brasse as though they brent in a fornace: and his voyce as the sounde of many waters.
15 His feet were like burnished brass, as if it had been refined in a furnace. His voice was like the voice of many waters.
16 And he had in his right honde vii. starres. And out of his mouth wet a sharpe twoo edged swearde. And his face shone even as the sonne in his strength.
16 He had seven stars in his right hand. Out of his mouth proceeded a sharp two-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining at its brightest.
17 And when I sawe him I fell at his fete even as deed. And he layde hys ryght honde apon me sayinge vnto me: feare not. I am the fyrst and the laste
17 Y cuando yo le vi, caí como muerto á sus pies. Y él puso su diestra sobre mí, diciéndome: No temas: yo soy el primero y el último;
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. He laid his right hand on me, saying, “Don’t be afraid. I am the first and the last,
18 and am alyve and was deed. And beholde I am alyve for ever more and have the kayes of hell and of deeth.
18 and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever. Amen. I have the keys of Death and of Hades.
19 wryte therfore the thynges which thou haste sene and the thynges which are and the thynges which shalbe fulfylled hereafter:
19 Escribe las cosas que has visto, y las que son, y las que han de ser después de éstas:
19 Write therefore the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will happen hereafter.
20 and the mystery of the vii. starres which thou sawest in my ryght honde and the vii. golden candelstyckes. The vii. stares are the messengers of the vii. congregacions: And the vii. candlestyckes which thou sawest are the vii. congregacions.
20 The mystery of the seven stars which you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lamp stands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven assemblies. The seven lamp stands are seven assemblies.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

For the city of God was barren in all nations before …
