PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 Therefore, let us be very careful so that none of you might seem to have failed to reach the promise left behind for you to enter God's rest.
1 Let’s fear therefore, lest perhaps anyone of you should seem to have come short of a promise of entering into his rest.
2 For we were told the good news just as they were. But that message did not benefit those who did not unite in faith with those who obeyed.
2 For indeed we have had good news preached to us, even as they also did, but the word they heard didn’t profit them, because it wasn’t mixed with faith by those who heard.
3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as he said, “As I swore in my wrath, They will never enter my rest.” Even so, his works were finished from the foundation of the world.
3 For we who have believed do enter into that rest, even as he has said, “As I swore in my wrath, they will not enter into my rest;” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4 For he has somewhere spoken about the seventh day: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.”
4 For he has said this somewhere about the seventh day, “God rested on the seventh day from all his works;”
5 And again in this same passage he said, “They will never enter my rest.”
5 and in this place again, “They will not enter into my rest.”
6 Therefore, because it is still reserved for some to enter his rest, and since many Israelites who heard the good news did not enter it because of disobedience,
6 Seeing therefore it remains that some should enter into it, and they to whom the good news was preached before failed to enter in because of disobedience,
7 God has again set a certain day calling it “Today.” After many days, he spoke through David, as it was earlier said, “Today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”
7 he again defines a certain day, “today”, saying through David so long a time afterward (just as has been said), “Today if you will hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.”
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken about another day.
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day.
9 Therefore there is still a Sabbath rest reserved for God's people.
9 There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
10 For he who enters into God's rest has himself also rested from his deeds, just as God did from his.
10 For he who has entered into his rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from his.
11 Therefore let us be eager to enter that rest, so that no one will fall into the kind of disobedience that they did.
11 Let’s therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience.
12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword. It pierces even to the division of soul from spirit, and joints from marrow. It is able to know the heart's thoughts and intentions.
12 For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
13 Nothing created is hidden before God. Instead, everything is bare and open to the eyes of the one to whom we must give account.
13 There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us firmly hold to our beliefs.
14 Having then a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let’s hold tightly to our confession.
15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot feel sympathy for our weaknesses. Instead, we have someone who has in all ways been tempted as we are, except that he is without sin.
15 For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.
16 Let us then go with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
16 Let’s therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace for help in time of need.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 4:11 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Hebrews (Homily VII)

Faith is indeed great and bringeth salvation, and without it, it is not possible ever to be saved. It suffices not however of itself to accomplish this, but there is need of a right conversation also.

  2. Quotes verse 4:15 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter VIII — 31-36)

It could be said only of Him, for He also "was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin." He alone could say, "Behold, the prince of this world cometh, and shall find nothing in me." Sift any one else, who is accounted righteous, yet is he not in all respects without sin; not even such as …

  3. Quotes verse 4:13 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XX)

For even here they are manifest to the majority, as not being that which they appear to be, but as wearing a mask only; but much more will they be detected hereafter, when all things appear "naked and open." And by another motive again He withdraws them from the hypocrites, by showing that His injunction is light.

  4. Quotes verse 4:16 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture VI)

… I seem to accuse him without reason, let me make a digression to tell who this Manes is, and in part what he teaches: for all time would fail to describe adequately the whole of his foul teaching. But for help in time of need, store up in thy memory what I have said to former hearers, and will …

  5. Quotes verse 4:13 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LVI)

For He knows all things exactly; "For all things are naked and opened unto His eyes." No man will there appear rich or poor, mighty or weak, wise or unwise, bond or free; but these masks will be dashed in pieces, and the inquiry will be into their works only.
