VUL Clementine Vulgate
PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
2 Gratia vobis, et pax adimpleatur in cognitione Dei, et Christi Jesu Domini nostri:
5 Vos autem curam omnem subinferentes, ministrate in fide vestra virtutem, in virtute autem scientiam,
6 in scientia autem abstinentiam, in abstinentia autem patientiam, in patientia autem pietatem,
7 in pietate autem amorem fraternitatis, in amore autem fraternitatis caritatem.
11 Sic enim abundanter ministrabitur vobis introitus in æternum regnum Domini nostri et Salvatoris Jesu Christi.
17 Accipiens enim a Deo Patre honorem et gloriam, voce delapsa ad eum hujuscemodi a magnifica gloria: Hic est Filius meus dilectus, in quo mihi complacui, ipsum audite.
19 Et habemus firmiorem propheticum sermonem: cui benefacitis attendentes quasi lucernæ lucenti in caliginoso loco donec dies elucescat, et lucifer oriatur in cordibus vestris:

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 1:19 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXXVI)

The Apostle Peter says, "We have a more sure word of prophecy, whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts."

  2. Quotes verse 1:4 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XXII)

For thus we come to bear Christ in us, because His Body and Blood are distributed through our members; thus it is that, according to the blessed Peter, we become partakers of the divine nature.

  3. Quotes verse 1:19 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter V — 19-40)

Of this lamp the Apostle Peter says: "We have a more sure word of prophecy, to which ye do well giving heed, as unto a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts." Accordingly the prophets are lamps, and all prophecy one great lamp.

  4. Quotes verse 1:17–19 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter VIII — 13, 14)

"We have," saith the Apostle Peter, "a more sure word of prophecy, to which ye do well to give heed, as to a lamp in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts."
