Notes on this text (2)

1 Praise the LORD! Praise, you servants of the LORD, praise the LORD’s name. 2 Blessed be the LORD’s name, from this time forward and forever more. 3 From the rising of the sun to its going down, the LORD’s name is to be praised. 4 The LORD is high above all nations, his glory above the heavens. 5 Who is like the LORD, our God, who has his seat on high, 6 who stoops down to see in heaven and on the earth? 7 He raises up the poor out of the dust, and lifts up the needy from the ash heap, 8 that he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people. 9 He settles the barren woman in her home as a joyful mother of children. Praise the LORD!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

I believe, brethren, that ye remarked and committed to memory the title of this Psalm. "The conversion," he saith, "of Haggai and Zechariah." These prophets were not as yet in existence, when these verses were sung....But both, the one within a year after the other, began to prophesy that which seemeth to pertain to the restoration of the temple, as …

In itself, indeed, the glory of the Father could neither be diminished nor enlarged; but without any doubt it was less among men when God was known only in Judea: and as yet children praised not the name of the Lord from the rising of the sun to its going down.
