1 Alleluia. Give thanks to the Lord; for [he is] good: For his mercy [endures] forever.
118:1 Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.
2 Let now the house of Israel say, that [he is] good: For his mercy [endures] forever.
118:2 Let Israel now say that his loving kindness endures forever.
3 Let now the house of Aaron say, that [he is] good: For his mercy [endures] forever.
118:3 Let the house of Aaron now say that his loving kindness endures forever.
4 Let now all that fear the Lord say, that [he is] good: For his mercy [endures] forever.
118:4 Now let those who fear Yahweh say that his loving kindness endures forever.
5 I called on the Lord out of affliction: And he hearkened to me, [so as to bring me] into a wide place.
118:5 Out of my distress, I called on Yah. Yah answered me with freedom.
6 The Lord is my helper; And I will not fear what man shall do to me.
118:6 Yahweh is on my side. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
7 The Lord is my helper; And I shall see [my desire] upon mine enemies.
118:7 Yahweh is on my side among those who help me. Therefore I will look in triumph at those who hate me.
8 [It is] better to trust in the Lord Than to trust in man.
118:8 It is better to take refuge in Yahweh, than to put confidence in man.
9 [It is] better to hope in the Lord, Than to hope in princes.
118:9 It is better to take refuge in Yahweh, than to put confidence in princes.
10 All nations compassed me about: But in the name of the Lord I repulsed them.
118:10 All the nations surrounded me, but in Yahweh’s name I cut them off.
11 They completely compassed me about: But in the name of the Lord I repulsed them.
118:11 They surrounded me, yes, they surrounded me. In Yahweh’s name I indeed cut them off.
12 They compassed me about as bees [do] a honeycomb, And they burst into flame as fire among thorns: But in the name of the Lord I repulsed them.
118:12 They surrounded me like bees. They are quenched like the burning thorns. In Yahweh’s name I cut them off.
13 I was thrust, and sorely shaken, that I might fall: But the Lord helped me.
118:13 You pushed me back hard, to make me fall, but Yahweh helped me.
14 The Lord is my strength and my song, And is become my salvation.
118:14 Yah is my strength and song. He has become my salvation.
15 The voice of exultation and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: The right hand of the Lord has wrought mightily.
118:15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tents of the righteous. “The right hand of Yahweh does valiantly.
16 The right hand of the Lord has exalted me: The right hand of the Lord has wrought powerfully.
118:16 The right hand of Yahweh is exalted! The right hand of Yahweh does valiantly!”
17 I shall not die, but live, And recount the works of the Lord.
118:17 I will not die, but live, and declare Yah’s works.
18 The Lord has chastened me sore: But he has not given me up to death.
118:18 Castigóme gravemente JAH: mas no me entregó á la muerte.
118:18 Yah has punished me severely, but he has not given me over to death.
19 Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and give praise to the Lord.
118:19 Open to me the gates of righteousness. I will enter into them. I will give thanks to Yah.
20 This is the gate of the Lord: The righteous shall enter by it.
118:20 This is the gate of Yahweh; the righteous will enter into it.
21 I will give thanks to thee; because thou hast heard me, And art become my salvation.
118:21 I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me, and have become my salvation.
22 The stone which the builders rejected, The same is become the head of the corner.
118:22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
23 This has been done of the Lord; And it is wonderful in our eyes.
118:23 This is Yahweh’s doing. It is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day which the Lord has made: Let us exult and rejoice in it.
118:24 This is the day that Yahweh has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!
25 O Lord, save now: O Lord, send now prosperity.
118:25 Oh Jehová, salva ahora, te ruego: oh Jehová, ruégote hagas prosperar ahora.
118:25 Save us now, we beg you, Yahweh! Yahweh, we beg you, send prosperity now.
26 Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord: We have blessed you out of the house of the Lord.
118:26 Blessed is he who comes in Yahweh’s name! We have blessed you out of Yahweh’s house.
27 God is the Lord, and he has shined upon us: Celebrate the feast with thick [branches,] [Binding the victims] even to the horns of the altar.
118:27 Yahweh is God, and he has given us light. Bind the sacrifice with cords, even to the horns of the altar.
28 Thou art my God, and I will give thee thanks: Thou art my God, and I will exalt thee. I will give thanks to thee, for thou hast heard me, And art become my salvation.
118:28 Mi Dios eres tú, y á ti alabaré: Dios mío, á ti ensalzaré.
118:28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you. You are my God, I will exalt you.
29 Give thanks to the Lord; for he is good: For his mercy [endures] forever.
118:29 Oh give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 118.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

(ver. 1). These are the courts of the Lord's house, this all His people, this the true Jerusalem. Let those rather listen who have refused to be the children of this city, since they have cut themselves off from the communion of all nations.
