1 For the end, a Psalm of David.
·
2 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament proclaims the work of his hands.
19:1 For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. The heavens declare the glory of God. The expanse shows his handiwork.
3 Day to day utters speech, And night to night proclaims knowledge.
19:2 Day after day they pour out speech, and night after night they display knowledge.
4 There are no speeches or words, In which their voices are not heard.
19:3 There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard.
5 Their voice is gone out into all the earth, And their words to the ends of the world.
19:4 Their voice has gone out through all the earth, their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun,
6 In the sun he has set his tabernacle; And he comes forth as a bridegroom out of his chamber: He will exult as a giant to run his course.
19:5 which is as a bridegroom coming out of his room, like a strong man rejoicing to run his course.
7 His going forth is from the extremity of heaven, And his circuit to the [other] end of heaven: And no one shall be hidden from his heat.
19:6 His going out is from the end of the heavens, his circuit to its ends. There is nothing hidden from its heat.
8 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting souls: The testimony of the Lord is faithful, instructing babes.
19:7 Yahweh’s law is perfect, restoring the soul. Yahweh’s covenant is sure, making wise the simple.
9 The ordinances of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: The commandment of the Lord is bright, enlightening the eyes.
19:8 Yahweh’s precepts are right, rejoicing the heart. Yahweh’s commandment is pure, enlightening the eyes.
10 The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever and ever: The judgments of the Lord are true, [and] justified altogether.
19:9 The fear of Yahweh is clean, enduring forever. Yahweh’s ordinances are true, and righteous altogether.
11 To be desired more than gold, and much precious stone: Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
19:10 They are more to be desired than gold, yes, than much fine gold, sweeter also than honey and the extract of the honeycomb.
12 For thy servant keeps to them: In the keeping of them [there is] great reward.
19:11 Moreover your servant is warned by them. In keeping them there is great reward.
13 Who will understand [his] transgressions? Purge thou me from my secret [sins].
19:12 Who can discern his errors? Forgive me from hidden errors.
14 And spare thy servant [the attack] of strangers: If they do not gain the dominion over me, then shall I be blameless, And I shall be clear from great sin.
19:13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins. Let them not have dominion over me. Then I will be upright. I will be blameless and innocent of great transgression.
15 So shall the sayings of my mouth, And the meditation of my heart, Be pleasing continually before thee, O Lord my helper, and my redeemer.
19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, Yahweh, my rock, and my redeemer.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 19.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
