1 This is the book of the lineage of Adam. In the day that God created man, he made him to the likeness of God.
1 ESTE es el libro de las generaciones de Adam. El día en que crió Dios al hombre, á la semejanza de Dios lo hizo;
2 He created them, male and female; and he blessed them. And he called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
3◆ Then Adam lived for one hundred and thirty years. And then he conceived a son in his own image and likeness, and he called his name Seth.
4◆ And after he conceived Seth, the days of Adam that passed were eight hundred years. And he conceived sons and daughters.
5◆ And all the time that passed while Adam lived was nine hundred and thirty years, and then he died.
6◆ Seth likewise lived for one hundred and five years, and then he conceived Enos.
6 Y vivió Seth ciento y cinco años, y engendró á Enós.
7◆ And after he conceived Enos, Seth lived for eight hundred and seven years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
7 Y vivió Seth, después que engendró á Enós, ochocientos y siete años: y engendró hijos é hijas.
8◆ And all the days of Seth that passed were nine hundred and twelve years, and then he died.
9◆ In truth, Enos lived ninety years, and then he conceived Cainan.
9 Y vivió Enós noventa años, y engendró á Cainán.
10◆ After his birth, he lived eight hundred and fifteen years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
10 Y vivió Enós después que engendró á Cainán, ochocientos y quince años: y engendró hijos é hijas.
11◆ And all the days of Enos that passed were nine hundred and five years, and then he died.
12◆ Likewise, Cainan lived seventy years, and then he conceived Mahalalel.
12 Y vivió Cainán setenta años, y engendró á Mahalaleel.
13◆ And after he conceived Mahalalel, Cainan lived for eight hundred and forty years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
13 Y vivió Cainán, después que engendró á Mahalaleel, ochocientos y cuarenta años: y engendró hijos é hijas.
14◆ And all the days of Cainan that passed were nine hundred and ten years, and then he died.
15◆ And Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and then he conceived Jared.
15 Y vivió Mahalaleel sesenta y cinco años, y engendró á Jared.
16◆ And after he conceived Jared, Mahalalel lived for eight hundred and thirty years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
16 Y vivió Mahalaleel, después que engendró á Jared, ochocientos y treinta años: y engendró hijos é hijas.
17◆ And all the days of Mahalalel that passed were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and then he died.
18◆ And Jared lived for one hundred and sixty-two years, and then he conceived Enoch.
18 Y vivió Jared ciento sesenta y dos años, y engendró á Henoch.
19◆ And after he conceived Enoch, Jared lived for eight hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
19 Y vivió Jared, después que engendró á Henoch, ochocientos años: y engendró hijos é hijas.
20◆ And all the days of Jared that passed were nine hundred and sixty-two years, and then he died.
21◆ Now Enoch lived for sixty-five years, and then he conceived Methuselah.
21 Y vivió Henoch sesenta y cinco años, y engendró á Mathusalam.
22◆ And Enoch walked with God. And after he conceived Methuselah, he lived for three hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
23◆ And all the days of Enoch that passed were three hundred and sixty-five years.
24◆ And he walked with God, and then he was seen no more, because God took him.
25◆ Likewise, Methuselah lived for one hundred and eighty-seven years, and then he conceived Lamech.
25 Y vivió Mathusalam ciento ochenta y siete años, y engendró á Lamech.
26◆ And after he conceived Lamech, Methuselah lived for seven hundred and eighty-two years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
27◆ And all the days of Methuselah that passed were nine hundred and sixty-nine years, and then he died.
28◆ Then Lamech lived for one hundred and eighty-two years, and he conceived a son.
29◆ And he called his name Noah, saying, “This one will console us from the works and hardships of our hands, in the land that the Lord has cursed.”
30◆ And after he conceived Noah, Lamech lived for five hundred and ninety-five years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
30 Y vivió Lamech, después que engendró á Noé, quinientos noventa y cinco años: y engendró hijos é hijas.
31◆ And all the days of Lamech that passed were seven hundred and seventy-seven years, and then he died. In truth, when Noah was five hundred years old, he conceived Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Why does my Bible say something different?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 5:6 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XV, Chapters 15–16)

Then because it is written, "And Seth lived 205 years," or, according to the Hebrew reading, "105 years, and begat Enos," who but a rash man could affirm that this was his first-born?

  2. Quotes verse 5:3 Gregory of Nazianzus, Theological Orations (The Fourth Theological Oration, Which is the Second Concerning the Son)

For in ordinary language an image is a motionless representation of that which has motion; but in this case it is the living reproduction of the Living One, and is more exactly like than was Seth to Adam, or any son to his father.

  3. Quotes verse 5:8 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XV, Chapters 15–16)

Will any man do so when it is written of him, "And he begat sons and daughters, and all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died?" And similarly regarding those whose years are afterwards mentioned, it is not disguised that they begat sons and daughters.

  4. Quotes verse 5:2 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XV, Chapters 17–19)

Further, Seth signifies "resurrection," and Enos his son signifies "man," not as Adam, which also signifies man, but is used in Hebrew indifferently for man and woman, as it is written, "Male and female created He them, and blessed them, and called their name Adam," leaving no room to doubt that though the woman was distinctively called Eve, yet the …
