4 Є҆гда́ же ви́дѣ гдⷭ҇ь, ꙗ҆́кѡ пристꙋпа́етъ ви́дѣти, воззва̀ є҆го̀ гдⷭ҇ь и҆з̾ кꙋпины̀, гл҃ѧ: мѡѷсе́е, мѡѷсе́е. Ѻ҆́нъ же речѐ: что́ є҆сть, гдⷭ҇и;
11 И҆ речѐ мѡѷсе́й къ бг҃ꙋ: кто́ є҆смь а҆́зъ, ꙗ҆́кѡ да пойдꙋ̀ къ фараѡ́нꙋ царю̀ є҆гѵ́петскомꙋ, и҆ ꙗ҆́кѡ да и҆зведꙋ̀ сы́ны і҆и҃лєвы ѿ землѝ є҆гѵ́петскїѧ;
13 И҆ речѐ мѡѷсе́й къ бг҃ꙋ: сѐ, а҆́зъ пойдꙋ̀ къ сынѡ́мъ і҆и҃лєвымъ и҆ рекꙋ̀ къ ни̑мъ: бг҃ъ ѻ҆тє́цъ на́шихъ посла́ мѧ къ ва́мъ: и҆ а҆́ще вопро́сѧтъ мѧ̀, что̀ и҆́мѧ є҆мꙋ̀, что̀ рекꙋ̀ къ ни̑мъ;
16 Ve, y junta los ancianos de Israel, y diles: Jehová, el Dios de vuestros padres, el Dios de Abraham, de Isaac, y de Jacob, me apareció, diciendo: De cierto os he visitado, y [visto] lo que se os hace en Egipto;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

    … spake to Moses, in a flame of fire out of the bush, and said, I am that I am, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, the God of thy fathers; go down into Egypt, and bring forth My people." And if you wish to learn what follows, you can do so from the same …
