PDT God's Word for You (Latin American Textual Bible)
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
8 Mirra, áloe y casia exhalan todas tus ropas.
10 Escucha, hija, atiende, e inclina tu oído.
10 Oye, hija, y mira, é inclina tu oído; y olvida tu pueblo, y la casa de tu padre;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XLIV)

This Psalm is addressed "to the sons of Korah," as its title shows. Now Korah is equivalent to the word baldness; and we find in the Gospel that our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified in "the place of a skull." It is clear then that this Psalm is sung to the "sons of His Passion.'" Now we have on this …

  2. Quotes verse 45:16 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Preface)

But our Lord is Himself the resurrection, as He does Himself declare, "I am the resurrection and the life." But the fathers are His children; for it is said by the prophet: "Instead of thy fathers, thy children have been made to thee." Christ Himself, therefore, together with the Father, is the God of the living, who spake to Moses, …

  3. Quotes verse 45:7 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVII, Chapters 14–16)

Thou hast loved righteousness and hated iniquity: therefore God, Thy God, hath anointed Thee with the oil of exultation above Thy fellows;" that is, plainly, Christ above Christians.

  4. Quotes verse 45:11 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily III)

Of this therefore the prophet discourses unto her, and saith, "Forget thy people, and thy father's house, so shall the king have pleasure in thy beauty." This Ruth did too, and because of this she became a mother of kings, even as the Church did likewise.

  5. Quotes verse 45:10 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture VII)

And for this reason, methinks, the Psalmist says to mankind, Forget also thine own people, and thy father's house, whom thou hast chosen for a father, whom thou hast drawn upon thyself to thy destruction.
