Notes on this text (3)

1 Pablo Apóstol de Jesu-Christo por voluntad de Dios, y Timothéo el hermano: 2 A los Santos y fieles hermanos en Jesu-Christo, que están en Colossas. 3 Gracia sea á vosotros, y paz de Dios nuestro Padre, y de nuestro Señor Jesu-Christo. Gracias damos al Dios, y Padre de nuestro Señor Jesu-Christo, orando siempre por vosotros: 4 Oyendo vuestra fé en Jesu-Christo, y el amor que tenéis á todos los Santos. 5 Por la esperanza que os está guardada en los cielos: de la qual habéis oído por la palabra muy verdadera del Evangelio: 6 El qual ha llegado á vosotros, como está también en todo el mundo; y dá fruto, y crece como entre vosotros, desde el día en que oisteis, y conocisteis la gracia de Dios según la verdad. 7 Como lo aprendisteis de Epaphras nuestro consiervo muy amado, que es por vosotros fiel Ministro de Jesu-Christo. 8 El que también nos informó de vuestro amor según el espíritu. 9 Por eso nosotros también desde el día que lo oímos, no cesamos de orar por vosotros, y de pedir que seáis llenos del conocimiento de su voluntad, en toda sabiduría é inteligencia espiritual: 10 Para que andeis dignos de Dios, agradándole en todo, fructificando en toda buena obra, y creciendo en la ciencia de Dios: 11 Siendo confortados en toda virtud según el poder de su gloria, en toda paciencia y longanimidad con gozo, 12 Dando gracias a Dios Padre, que nos hizo dignos de participar la suerte de los Santos en luz: 13 Que nos libró del poder de las tinieblas, y nos trasladó al reyno de su Hijo muy amado, 14 En el qual por su sangre tenemos la redención, la remisión de los pecados: 15 El que es imagen del Dios invisible, el primogénito de toda criatura; 16 Porque en él fueron criadas todas las cosas, que hay en los cielos y en la tierra, las visibles y las invisibles: ahora sean Thronos, ó Dominaciones, ó Principados, ó Potestades: todas fueron criadas por él mismo, y en él mismo. 17 Y él es ante todas las cosas, y todas subsisten por él. 18 Y él mismo es la Cabeza del cuerpo de la Iglesia, que es principio, primogénito de los muertos; de manera que él tiene el primado en todas las cosas; 19 Porque en él quiso hacer morar toda plenitud, 20 Y reconciliar por él á sí mismo todas las cosas, pacificando por la sangre de su Cruz, tanto lo que está en la tierra, como lo que está en el cielo. 21 Y vosotros, que en otro tiempo erais extraños, y enemigos de corazón por las malas obras: 22 Mas ahora os ha reconciliado en el cuerpo de su carne por la muerte, para presentaros Santos, y sin mancilla, é irreprehensibles delante de él: 23 Si es que perseverais cimentados en la fé, y firmes, y sin moveros de la esperanza del Evangelio, que habéis oído, que ha sido predicado á toda criatura que hay debaxo del cielo, del qual yo Pablo he sido hecho Ministro. 24 Que me gozo ahora en las aflicciones que he padecido por vosotros, y suplo en mi carne lo que resta de los sufrimientos de Christo, por el cuerpo de él, que es la Iglesia; 25 De la que he sido yo hecho Ministro, según la dispensación de Dios qué me fué dada para con vosotros, para dar cumplimiento á la palabra de Dios; 26 El mysterio que ha estado escondido en los siglos y generaciones, mas ahora ha sido manifestado á sus Santos, 27 A los quales ha querido Dios hacer conocer las riquezas de la gloria de éste mysterio entre los Gentiles, que Christo es en vosotros la esperanza de la gloria, 28 A quien nosotros anunciamos, amonestando á todo hombre, y enseñando á todo hombre en toda sabiduría, para que presentemos á todo hombre perfecto en Jesu-Christo; 29 En lo que aún trabajo, combatiendo según la eficacia, que obra en mí por su poder;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 1:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Colossians (Homily I)

    Holy indeed are all the Epistles of Paul: but some advantage have those which he sent after he was in bonds: those, for instance, to the Ephesians and Philemon: that to Timothy, that to the Philippians, and the one before us: for this also was sent when he was a prisoner, since he writes in it thus: "for which I …

  2. Quotes verse 1:16 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters III–IV)

    This being was endowed with all power by the Father, who placed everything under his authority, the Æons doing so likewise, so that "by him were all things, visible and invisible, created, thrones, divinities, dominions." He then was sent to her along with his contemporary angels.

  3. Quotes verse 1:16 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book XII, Chapters XX–XXIII)

    But yet the Scripture hath not declared that God made this formlessness, any more than it hath declared many other things; as the Cherubim,' and Seraphim,' and those of which the apostle distinctly speaks, Thrones,' Dominions,' Principalities,' Powers,' all of which it is manifest God made.

  4. Quotes verse 1:23 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXXV)

    For in proof that He meant this, and that before the taking of Jerusalem the gospel was preached, hear what Paul saith, "Their sound went into all the earth;" and again, "The gospel which was preached to every creature which is under Heaven." And seest thou him running from Jerusalem unto Spain?
