1 I Saul govori Jonatanu sinu svom i svim slugama svojim da ubiju Davida; ali Jonatan sin Saulov ljubljaše veoma Davida.
3 A ja ću izaći i stajaću pored oca svog u polju gde ti budeš, i govoriću o tebi s ocem svojim, i šta doznam javiću ti.
4 Y Jonathán habló bien de David á Saúl su padre, y díjole: No peque el rey contra su siervo David, pues que ninguna cosa ha cometido contra ti: antes sus obras te han sido muy buenas;
7 Tada Jonatan dozva Davida, i kaza mu Jonatan sve ovo; i dovede Jonatan Davida k Saulu, i opet bi pred njim kao pre.
9 Potom zli duh Gospodnji napade Saula kad seđaše kod kuće i držaše koplje u ruci, a David udaraše rukom o gusle.
11 A Saul posla ljude ka kući Davidovoj da ga čuvaju i ujutru ubiju. A to javi Davidu žena njegova Mihala govoreći: Ako noćas ne izbaviš dušu svoju, ujutru ćeš poginuti.
13 A Mihala uze lik, i metnu ga u postelju, i metnu mu pod glavu uzglavlje od kostreti, i pokri ga haljinom.
17 I reče Saul Mihali: Što me tako prevari i pusti neprijatelja mog da uteče? A Mihala reče Saulu: On mi reče: Pusti me, ili ću te ubiti.
17 Entonces Saúl dijo á Michâl: ¿Por qué me has así engañado, y has dejado escapar á mi enemigo? Y Michâl respondió á Saúl: Porque él me dijo: Déjame ir; si no, yo te mataré.
I otidoše on i Samuilo, i ostaše u Najotu.
19 A Saulu dođe glas i rekoše mu: Eno Davida u Najotu u Rami.
20 Tada posla Saul ljude da uhvate Davida; i oni videše zbor proroka gde prorokuju, a Samuilo im starešina. I duh Gospodnji dođe na poslanike Saulove, te i oni prorokovahu.
21 A kad to javiše Saulu, on posla druge poslanike, ali i oni prorokovahu; te Saul opet posla treće poslanike, ali i oni prorokovahu.
24 Pa skide i on haljine svoje sa sebe, i prorokova i on pred Samuilom, i padnuvši ležaše go ceo onaj dan i svu noć. Stoga se govori: Eda li je i Saul među prorocima?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 19:11 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LIX)

There is indeed a story in the Scripture of the Reigns, of the occasion when Saul sent to guard the house in order that he might kill David....But in like manner as Saul effected not his purpose of slaying David: so this could not the government of the Jews effect, that the testimony of guards sleeping should avail more …
