1 A kad car seđaše kod kuće svoje, i Gospod mu dade mir svuda unaokolo od svih neprijatelja njegovih,
1 When the king lived in his house, and Yahweh had given him rest from all his enemies all around,
2 reče car Natanu proroku: Vidi, ja stojim u kući od kedrova drveta, a kovčeg Božji stoji pod zavesima.
2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but God’s ark dwells within curtains.”
3 A Natan reče caru: Šta ti je god u srcu, idi, čini, jer je Gospod s tobom.
3 Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for Yahweh is with you.”
4 Ali onu noć dođe reč Gospodnja k Natanu govoreći:
4 That same night, Yahweh’s word came to Nathan, saying,
5 Idi i reci sluzi mom Davidu: Ovako veli Gospod: Ti li ćeš mi načiniti kuću da u njoj nastavam?
5 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Yahweh says, “Should you build me a house for me to dwell in?
6 For I have not lived in a house since the day that I brought the children of Israel up out of Egypt, even to this day, but have moved around in a tent and in a tabernacle.
7 In all places in which I have walked with all the children of Israel, did I say a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’”’
8 Now therefore tell my servant David this: ‘Yahweh of Armies says, “I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people, over Israel.
9 I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you. I will make you a great name, like the name of the great ones who are on the earth.
10 I odrediću mesto narodu svom Izrailju, i posadiću ga, te će nastavati u svom mestu, i neće se više pretresati, niti će ih više mučiti nepravednici kao pre,
10 I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place and be moved no more. The children of wickedness will not afflict them any more, as at the first,
11 and as from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. I will cause you to rest from all your enemies. Moreover Yahweh tells you that Yahweh will make you a house.
12 When your days are fulfilled and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up your offspring after you, who will proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 On će sazidati dom imenu mom, i utvrdiću presto carstva njegovog doveka.
13 He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
14 Ja ću mu biti Otac, i on će mi biti sin: ako učini šta zlo, karaću ga prutom ljudskim i udarcima sinova čovečijih.
14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of men;
15 but my loving kindness will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you.
16 Nego će tvrd biti dom tvoj i carstvo tvoje doveka pred tobom, i presto će tvoj stajati doveka.
16 Your house and your kingdom will be made sure forever before you. Your throne will be established forever.”’”
17 Po svim ovim rečima i po svoj ovoj utvari kaza Natan Davidu.
17 Nathan spoke to David all these words, and according to all this vision.
18 Tada dođe car David i stade pred Gospodom, i reče: Ko sam ja, Gospode, Gospode, i šta je moj dom, te si me doveo dovde?
18 Then David the king went in and sat before Yahweh; and he said, “Who am I, Lord Yahweh, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far?
19 This was yet a small thing in your eyes, Lord Yahweh, but you have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come; and this among men, Lord Yahweh!
20 What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Lord Yahweh.
21 Radi reči svoje i po srcu svom učinio si sve ove velike stvari obznanjujući ih sluzi svom.
21 For your word’s sake, and according to your own heart, you have worked all this greatness, to make your servant know it.
22 Zato si velik, Gospode Bože, nema takvog kakav si Ti; i nema Boga osim Tebe, po svemu što čusmo svojim ušima.
22 Therefore you are great, Yahweh God. For there is no one like you, neither is there any God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
23 What one nation on the earth is like your people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem to himself for a people, and to make himself a name, and to do great things for you, and awesome things for your land, before your people, whom you redeemed to yourself out of Egypt, from the nations and their gods?
24 You established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever; and you, Yahweh, became their God.
25 I tako, Gospode Bože, reč koju si obrekao sluzi svom i domu njegovom, potvrdi zasvagda, i učini kako si rekao.
25 “Now, Yahweh God, the word that you have spoken concerning your servant, and concerning his house, confirm it forever, and do as you have spoken.
26 Neka se veliča ime Tvoje do veka, da se govori: Gospod je nad vojskama Bog nad Izrailjem; i dom sluge Tvog Davida neka stoji tvrdo pred Tobom.
26 Let your name be magnified forever, saying, ‘Yahweh of Armies is God over Israel; and the house of your servant David will be established before you.’
27 For you, Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, have revealed to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found in his heart to pray this prayer to you.
28 Tako, Gospode, Gospode, Ti si Bog, i reči su Tvoje istina; Ti si ovo dobro obrekao sluzi svom.
28 “Now, O Lord Yahweh, you are God, and your words are truth, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.
29 Budi, dakle, voljan i blagoslovi dom sluge svog da bude doveka pred Tobom; jer si Ti Gospode, rekao, i Tvojim će blagoslovom biti blagosloven dom sluge Tvog doveka.
29 Now therefore, let it please you to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you; for you, Lord Yahweh, have spoken it. Let the house of your servant be blessed forever with your blessing.”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 7:8–16 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVII, Chapters 7–8)

And his house shall be faithful, and his kingdom even for evermore before me, and his throne shall be set up even for evermore." He who thinks this grand promise was fulfilled in Solomon greatly errs; for he attends to the saying, "He shall build me an house," but he does not attend to the saying, "His house shall be …

  2. Quotes verse 7:14 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVII, Chapters 9–11)

For there, that is, in the Book of Samuel, he says, "And if he commit iniquity I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of men; but my mercy will I not take away from him," meaning by stripes the strokes of correction.

  3. Quotes verse 7:19 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVII, Chapters 12–13)

Therefore David understanding this, says in the second Book of Kings, in the passage from which we digressed to this psalm, "Thou hast spoken also for Thy servant's house for a great while to come." Therefore also a little after he says, "Now begin, and bless the house of Thy servant for evermore," etc., because the son was then about …
