1 Y JEHOVÁ dijo á Moisés: Mira, yo te he constituído dios para Faraón, y tu hermano Aarón será tu profeta.
2 ты будешь говорить [ему] все, что Я повелю тебе, а Аарон, брат твой, будет говорить фараону, чтобы он отпустил сынов Израилевых из земли своей;
3 но Я ожесточу сердце фараоново, и явлю множество знамений Моих и чудес Моих в земле Египетской;
4 фараон не послушает вас, и Я наложу руку Мою на Египет и выведу воинство Мое, народ Мой, сынов Израилевых, из земли Египетской — судами великими;
8 Y habló Jehová á Moisés y á Aarón, diciendo:
11 Entonces llamó también Faraón sabios y encantadores; é hicieron también lo mismo los encantadores de Egipto con sus encantamientos;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 7:1 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter VI)

    … says, "looking towards heaven, and observing the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and all the ornament of heaven, falling into error, thou shouldest adore and serve them." And Moses himself, being a man of God, was indeed given as a god before Pharaoh; but he is not properly termed Lord, nor is called God by the prophets, but …

  2. Quotes verse 7:12 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXIII)

    For the magicians did likewise, and casting down their rods they exhibited serpents: but the serpent of Moses swallowed up the rods of all those magicians. Let there be perceived therefore even now the body of the devil: this is what is coming to pass, he is being devoured by the Gentiles who have believed, he hath become meat for …
