1 Аврам был девяноста девяти лет, и Господь явился Авраму и сказал ему: Я Бог Всемогущий; ходи предо Мною и будь непорочен;
5 и не будешь ты больше называться Аврамом, но будет тебе имя: Авраам, ибо Я сделаю тебя отцом множества народов;
6 и весьма, весьма распложу тебя, и произведу от тебя народы, и цари произойдут от тебя;
7 и поставлю завет Мой между Мною и тобою и между потомками твоими после тебя в роды их, завет вечный в том, что Я буду Богом твоим и потомков твоих после тебя;
10 Сей есть завет Мой, который вы должны соблюдать между Мною и между вами и между потомками твоими после тебя [в роды их]: да будет у вас обрезан весь мужеский пол;
15 И сказал Бог Аврааму: Сару, жену твою, не называй Сарою, но да будет имя ей: Сарра;
18 Y dijo Abraham á Dios: Ojalá Ismael viva delante de ti.
20 Y en cuanto á Ismael, [también] te he oído: he aquí que le bendeciré, y le haré fructificar y multiplicar mucho en gran manera: doce príncipes engendrará, y ponerlo he por gran gente.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

    When it is said, "The male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that soul shall be cut off from his people, because he hath broken my covenant," some may be troubled how that ought to be understood, since it can be no fault of the infant whose life it is said must perish; nor has the …
