12 Hatred stirs up conflicts, but love covers over all offenses.
12 Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all wrongs.
13 Wisdom is found on the lips of a discerning person, but a rod is for the back of the one who has no sense.
13 Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has discernment, but a rod is for the back of him who is void of understanding.
14 Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool brings destruction near.
14 Wise men lay up knowledge, but the mouth of the foolish is near ruin.
15 The wealth of a rich man is his fortified city; the poverty of the poor is their destruction.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 10:10 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXXII)

But since this is so, what is that which Solomon says, and which we heard first to-day out of another lesson, "He that winketh with the eyes deceitfully, heapeth sorrow upon men; but he that reproveth openly, maketh peace"? If then "he that reproveth openly, maketh peace;" how "rebuke him between him and thee alone"?

  2. Quotes verse 10:26 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (The Second Part)

It is not I that say: hear the Scripture: "As a sour grape is vexation to the teeth, and smoke to the eyes, so is unrighteousness to them that use it." For he that shall have eaten unrighteousness, that is, he that shall have had unrighteousness wilfully, shall not be able to eat righteousness.
