1 He that loves instruction loves sense, But he that hates reproofs is a fool.
1 Whoever loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
2 He that has found favor with the Lord [is made] better; But a transgressor shall be passed over in silence.
2 A good man shall obtain favor from Yahweh, but he will condemn a man of wicked plans.
3 A man shall not prosper by wickedness; But the roots of the righteous shall not be taken up.
3 A man shall not be established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.
4 A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband; But as a worm in wood, so a bad woman destroys her husband.
4 A worthy woman is the crown of her husband, but a disgraceful wife is as rottenness in his bones.
5 The thoughts of the righteous [are true] judgments; But ungodly men devise deceits.
5 The thoughts of the righteous are just, but the advice of the wicked is deceitful.
6 The words of ungodly men are crafty; But the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.
6 The words of the wicked are about lying in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them.
7 When the ungodly is overthrown, he vanishes away; But the houses of the just remain.
7 The wicked are overthrown, and are no more, but the house of the righteous shall stand.
8 The mouth of an understanding [man] is praised by a man; But he that is dull of heart is had in derision.
8 A man shall be commended according to his wisdom, but he who has a warped mind shall be despised.
9 Better is a man in dishonor serving himself, Than one honoring himself and wanting bread.
9 Better is he who is little known, and has a servant, than he who honors himself and lacks bread.
10 A righteous man has pity for the lives of his cattle; But the bowels of the ungodly are unmerciful.
10 A righteous man respects the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.
11 He that tills his own land shall be satisfied with bread; But they that pursue vanities are void of understanding.
11 He who tills his land shall have plenty of bread, but he who chases fantasies is void of understanding.
11a He that enjoys himself in banquets of wine, Shall leave dishonor in his own strongholds.

12 The desires of the ungodly are evil; But the roots of the godly are firmly set.
12 The wicked desires the plunder of evil men, but the root of the righteous flourishes.
13 For the sin of [his] lips a sinner falls into snares; But a righteous man escapes from them.
13 An evil man is trapped by sinfulness of lips, but the righteous shall come out of trouble.
13a He whose looks are gentle shall be pitied, But he that contends in the gates will afflict souls.

14 The soul of a man shall be filled with good from the fruits of his mouth; And the recompense of his lips shall be given to him.
14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth. The work of a man’s hands shall be rewarded to him.
15 The ways of fools are right in their own eyes; But a wise man hearkens to counsels.
15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who is wise listens to counsel.
16 A fool declares his wrath the same day; But a prudent man hides his own disgrace.
16 A fool shows his annoyance the same day, but one who overlooks an insult is prudent.
17 A righteous man declares the open truth; But an unjust witness is deceitful.
17 He who is truthful testifies honestly, but a false witness lies.
18 Some wound as they speak, [like] swords; But the tongues of the wise heal.
18 There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.
19 True lips establish testimony; But a hasty witness has an unjust tongue.
19 Truth’s lips will be established forever, but a lying tongue is only momentary.
20 [There is] deceit in the heart of him that imagines evil; But they that love peace shall rejoice.
20 Deceit is in the heart of those who plot evil, but joy comes to the promoters of peace.
21 No injustice will please a just man; But the ungodly will be filled with mischief.
21 No mischief shall happen to the righteous, but the wicked shall be filled with evil.
22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord; But he that deals faithfully is accepted with him.
22 Lying lips are an abomination to Yahweh, but those who do the truth are his delight.
23 An understanding man is a throne of wisdom; But the heart of fools shall meet with curses.
23 A prudent man keeps his knowledge, but the hearts of fools proclaim foolishness.
24 The hand of chosen men shall easily obtain rule; But the deceitful shall be for a prey.
24 The hands of the diligent ones shall rule, but laziness ends in slave labor.
25 A terrible word troubles the heart of a righteous man; But a good message rejoices him.
25 Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad.
26 A just arbitrator shall be his own friend; But mischief shall pursue sinners; And the way of ungodly men shall lead them astray.
26 A righteous person is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
27 A deceitful man shall catch no game; But a blameless man is a precious possession.
27 The slothful man doesn’t roast his game, but the possessions of diligent men are prized.
28 In the ways of righteousness is life; But the ways of those that remember injuries [lead] to death.
28 In the way of righteousness is life; in its path there is no death.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 12:10 John of Damascus, An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith (Book IV, Chapters XXI–XXIII)

… God, knowing the denseness of the Israelites and their carnal love and propensity towards matter in everything, made this law: first, in order that the servant and the cattle should rest as it is written, for the righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: next, in order that when they take their ease from the distraction of material …
