1 [A Psalm] of David. Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous; Praise becomes the upright.
2 Praise the Lord on the harp; Play to him on a psaltery of ten strings.
33:2 Celebrad á Jehová con arpa: cantadle con salterio y decacordio.
3 Sing to him a new song; Play skillfully with a loud noise.
33:3 Cantadle canción nueva: hacedlo bien tañendo con júbilo.
4 For the word of the Lord is right; And all his works are faithful.
5 He loves mercy and judgment; The earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.
6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were established; And all the host of them by the breath of his [mouth].
7 Who gathers the waters of the sea as [in] a bottle; Who lays up the deeps in treasuries.
8 Let all the earth fear the Lord; And let all that dwell in the world be moved because of him.
9 For he spoke, and they were made; He commanded, and they were created.
33:9 Porque él dijo, y fué hecho; él mandó, y existió.
10 The Lord frustrates the counsels of the nations; He brings to nought also the reasonings of the peoples, And brings to nought the counsels of princes.
11 But the counsel of the Lord endures forever, The thoughts of his heart from generation to generation.
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; The people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.
13 The Lord looks out of heaven; He beholds all the sons of men.
14 He looks from his prepared habitation On all the dwellers on the earth;
15 Who fashioned their hearts alone; Who understands all their works.
16 A king is not saved by reason of a great host; And a giant shall not be delivered by the greatness of his strength.
17 A horse is vain for safety; Neither shall he be delivered by the greatness of his power.
18 Behold, the eyes of the Lord are on them that fear him, Those that hope in his mercy;
33:18 He aquí, el ojo de Jehová sobre los que le temen, sobre los que esperan en su misericordia;
19 To deliver their souls from death, And to keep them alive in famine.
20 Our soul waits on the Lord; For he is our helper and defender.
33:20 Nuestra alma esperó á Jehová; nuestra ayuda y nuestro escudo es él.
21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, And we have hoped in his holy name.
22 Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, According as we have hoped in thee.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 33.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

    To David himself; for understanding; by which it is understood that not by the merits of works, but by the grace of God, man is delivered, confessing his sins. 2. "Blessed are they whose unrighteousness is forgiven, and whose sins are covered" (ver. 1): and whose sins are buried in oblivion.

    Thus saith the Scripture, to that effect: "By the Word of the Lord were the heavens established, and all the might of them, by the spirit of His mouth." And again, "All things were made by Him, and without Him was nothing made." There is no exception or deduction stated; but the Father made all things by Him, whether visible …

    Thence we fell again to sighs and groans, and our steps to follow the broad and beaten ways of the world; for many thoughts were in our heart, but Thy counsel standeth for ever. Out of which counsel Thou didst mock ours, and preparedst Thine own, purposing to give us meat in due season, and to open Thy hand, and …

    One, because the creative works of Christ are no other than the Father's; for the creation of all things is one, the Father having made them through the Son: For He spake, and they were made; He commanded, and they were created, saith the Psalmist.
