1 For the end, a Psalm of David,
·
2 when Nathan the prophet came to him, when he had gone in to Bersabee.
·
3 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of thy compassions blot out my transgression.
51:1 For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.
4 Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
51:2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. Cleanse me from my sin.
5 For I am conscious of mine iniquity; and my sin is continually before me.
51:3 For I know my transgressions. My sin is constantly before me.
6 Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil before thee: that thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
51:4 Against you, and you only, I have sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight, so you may be proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge.
7 For, behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother conceive me.
51:5 Behold, I was born in iniquity. My mother conceived me in sin.
8 For, behold, thou lovest truth: thou hast manifested to me the secret and hidden things of thy wisdom.
51:6 Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts. You teach me wisdom in the inmost place.
9 Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be purified: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.
51:7 Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
10 Thou shalt cause me to hear gladness and joy: the afflicted bones shall rejoice.
51:8 Let me hear joy and gladness, that the bones which you have broken may rejoice.
11 Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
51:9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all of my iniquities.
12 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit in my inward parts.
51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.
13 Cast me not away from thy presence; and remove not thy Holy Spirit from me.
51:11 Don’t throw me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.
14 Restore to me the joy of thy salvation: establish me with thy directing Spirit.
51:12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation. Uphold me with a willing spirit.
15 [Then] will I teach transgressors thy ways; and ungodly men shall turn to thee.
51:13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways. Sinners will be converted to you.
16 Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation: [and] my tongue shall joyfully declare thy righteousness.
51:14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, the God of my salvation. My tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.
17 O Lord, thou shalt open my lips; and my mouth shall declare thy praise.
51:15 Lord, open my lips. My mouth will declare your praise.
18 For if thou desiredst sacrifice, I would have given [it]: thou wilt not take pleasure in whole-burnt-offerings.
51:16 For you don’t delight in sacrifice, or else I would give it. You have no pleasure in burnt offering.
19 Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit: a broken and humbled heart God will not despise.
51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. O God, you will not despise a broken and contrite heart.
20 Do good, O Lord, to Sion in thy good pleasure; and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.
51:18 Do well in your good pleasure to Zion. Build the walls of Jerusalem.
21 Then shalt thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, offering, and whole-burnt-sacrifices: then shall they offer calves upon thine altar.
51:19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of righteousness, in burnt offerings and in whole burnt offerings. Then they will offer bulls on your altar.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 51.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
