1 Y RESPONDIÓ Job, y dijo:
2 вои́стиннꙋ вѣ́мъ, ꙗ҆́кѡ та́кѡ є҆́сть: ка́кѡ бо бꙋ́детъ пра́веденъ человѣ́къ ᲂу҆ гдⷭ҇а;
4 Премⷣръ бо є҆́сть мы́слїю, крѣ́покъ же и҆ вели́къ: кто̀ же́стокъ бы́въ проти́вꙋ є҆гѡ̀, пребы́сть;
12 А҆́ще во́зметъ, кто̀ возврати́тъ; и҆лѝ кто̀ рече́тъ є҆мꙋ̀: что̀ сотвори́лъ є҆сѝ;
12 He aquí, arrebatará; ¿quién le hará restituir? ¿Quién le dirá, Qué haces?
14 А҆́ще же мѧ̀ ᲂу҆слы́шитъ, и҆лѝ разсꙋ́дитъ глаго́лы моѧ̑;
15 Que aunque fuese yo justo, no responderé; antes habré de rogar á mi juez.
19 Поне́же си́ленъ є҆́сть крѣ́постїю: кто̀ ᲂу҆̀бо сꙋдꙋ̀ є҆гѡ̀ воспроти́витсѧ;
20 Si yo me justificare, me condenará mi boca; si [me dijere] perfecto, esto me hará inicuo.
21 [Bien que] yo [fuese] íntegro, no conozco mi alma: reprocharé mi vida.
24 Пре́дана є҆́сть землѧ̀ въ рꙋ́цѣ нечести́вагѡ, ли́ца сꙋді́й є҆ѧ̀ покрыва́етъ: а҆́ще же не са́мъ є҆́сть, кто̀ є҆́сть;
26 И҆лѝ є҆́сть кораблє́мъ слѣ́дъ пꙋтѝ, и҆лѝ ѻ҆рла̀ летѧ́ща, и҆́щꙋща ꙗ҆́ди;
27 Si digo: Olvidaré mi queja, dejaré mi aburrimiento, y esforzaréme:
29 А҆́ще же нечести́въ є҆́смь, почто̀ не ᲂу҆мро́хъ;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 9:24 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter VII — 1-13)

    That which a certain scripture says: "The earth was delivered into the hands of the ungodly." The flesh was given into the power of the Jews; and this that thereby the bag, as it were, might be rent asunder, whence our purchase-price might run out.

  2. Quotes verse 9:8 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XI)

    And this Job said mystically, Which alone spread out the heaven, and walketh upon the sea as on firm ground; signifying to those who understand that He who when present here walked upon the sea is also He who aforetime made the heavens.

  3. Quotes verse 9:24 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XXXVII)

    "The earth is given into the hands of the wicked." What is meant by "earth" being "given into the hands of the ungodly"?

  4. Quotes verse 9:24 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XXXVIII)

    "I slept," because "I have power to lay down My life, and I have power to take it again." "I laid Me down and slept, and rose up again." Rage then the Jews; be "the earth given into the hands of the wicked," be the flesh left to the hands of persecutors, let them on wood suspend it, with nails …
