2 And he answering said to them, Think ye that these Galileans were sinners beyond all the Galileans because they suffered such things? 2 Jesus answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered such things?
2 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· δοκεῖτε ὅτι οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι οὗτοι ἁμαρτωλοὶ παρὰ πάντας τοὺς Γαλιλαίους ἐγένοντο, ὅτι τοιαῦτα πεπόνθασιν;
3 No, I say to you, but if ye repent not, ye shall all perish in the same manner. 3 I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way.
4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, think ye that they were debtors beyond all the men who dwell in Jerusalem? 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the men who dwell in Jerusalem?
4 ἢ ἐκεῖνοι οἱ δέκα καὶ ὀκτώ, ἐφ᾽ οὓς ἔπεσεν ὁ πύργος ἐν τῷ Σιλωὰμ καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτούς, δοκεῖτε ὅτι οὗτοι ὀφειλέται ἐγένοντο παρὰ πάντας [τοὺς] ἀνθρώπους τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ;
5 No, I say to you, but if ye repent not, ye shall all perish in like manner. 5 I tell you, no, but, unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way.”
6 And he spoke this parable: A certain [man] had a fig-tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit upon it and did not find [any]. 6 He spoke this parable. “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.
7 And he said to the vinedresser, Behold, [these] three years I come seeking fruit on this fig-tree and find none: cut it down; why does it also render the ground useless? 7 He said to the vine dresser, ‘Behold, these three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and found none. Cut it down! Why does it waste the soil?’
7 εἶπε δὲ πρὸς τὸν ἀμπελουργόν· ἰδοὺ τρία ἔτη ἔρχομαι ζητῶν καρπὸν ἐν τῇ συκῇ ταύτῃ, καὶ οὐχ εὑρίσκω· ἔκκοψον αὐτήν· ἱνατί καὶ τὴν γῆν καταργεῖ;
8 But he answering says to him, Sir, let it alone for this year also, until I shall dig about it and put dung, 8 He answered, ‘Lord, leave it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it.
9 and if it shall bear fruit — but if not, after that thou shalt cut it down. 9 If it bears fruit, fine; but if not, after that, you can cut it down.’”
10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. 10 He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath day.
11 And lo, [there was] a woman having a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and she was bent together and wholly unable to lift her head up. 11 Behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years. She was bent over and could in no way straighten herself up.
12 And Jesus, seeing her, called to [her], and said to her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your infirmity.”
13 And he laid his hands upon her; and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. 13 He laid his hands on her, and immediately she stood up straight and glorified God.
14 But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus healed on the sabbath, answering said to the crowd, There are six days in which [people] ought to work; in these therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day. 14 The ruler of the synagogue, being indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the multitude, “There are six days in which men ought to work. Therefore come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day!”
15 The Lord therefore answered him and said, Hypocrites! does not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the manger and leading [it] away, water [it]? 15 Therefore the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each one of you free his ox or his donkey from the stall on the Sabbath and lead him away to water?
15 ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτῷ ὁ Κύριος καὶ εἶπεν· ὑποκριτά, ἕκαστος ὑμῶν τῷ σαββάτῳ οὐ λύει τὸν βοῦν αὐτοῦ ἢ τὸν ὄνον ἀπὸ τῆς φάτνης καὶ ἀπαγαγὼν ποτίζει;
16 And this [woman], who is a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound, lo, [these] eighteen years, ought she not to be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? 16 Ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham whom Satan had bound eighteen long years, be freed from this bondage on the Sabbath day?”
16 ταύτην δέ, θυγατέρα Ἀβραὰμ οὖσαν, ἣν ἔδησεν ὁ σατανᾶς ἰδοὺ δέκα καὶ ὀκτὼ ἔτη, οὐκ ἔδει λυθῆναι ἀπὸ τοῦ δεσμοῦ τούτου τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ σαββάτου;
17 And as he said these things, all who were opposed to him were ashamed; and all the crowd rejoiced at all the glorious things which were being done by him. 17 As he said these things, all his adversaries were disappointed; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.
18 And he said, To what is the kingdom of God like? and to what shall I liken it? 18 He said, “What is God’s Kingdom like? To what shall I compare it?
18 Ἔλεγε δέ· τίνι ὁμοία ἐστὶν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ τίνι ὁμοιώσω αὐτήν;
19 It is like a grain of mustard [seed] which a man took and cast into his garden; and it grew and became a great tree, and the birds of heaven lodged in its branches. 19 It is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and put in his own garden. It grew and became a large tree, and the birds of the sky live in its branches.”
20 And again he said, To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? 20 Again he said, “To what shall I compare God’s Kingdom?
20 Πάλιν εἶπε· τίνι ὁμοιώσω τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ;
21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until the whole was leavened. 21 It is like yeast, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.”
22 And he went through one city and village after another, teaching, and journeying to Jerusalem. 22 He went on his way through cities and villages, teaching, and traveling on to Jerusalem.
23 And one said to him, Sir, [are] such as are to be saved few in number? But he said unto them, 23 One said to him, “Lord, are they few who are saved?” He said to them,
24 Strive with earnestness to enter in through the narrow door, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter in and will not be able. 24 “Strive to enter in by the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will seek to enter in and will not be able.
25 From the time that the master of the house shall have risen up and shall have shut the door, and ye shall begin to stand without and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, open to us; and he answering shall say to you, I know you not whence ye are: 25 When once the master of the house has risen up and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ then he will answer and tell you, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’
26 then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten in thy presence and drunk, and thou hast taught in our streets; 26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’
27 and he shall say, I tell you, I do not know you whence ye are; depart from me, all [ye] workers of iniquity. 27 He will say, ‘I tell you, I don’t know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity.’
28 There shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves cast out. 28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in God’s Kingdom, and yourselves being thrown outside.
29 And they shall come from east and west, and from north and south, and shall lie down at table in the kingdom of God. 29 They will come from the east, west, north, and south, and will sit down in God’s Kingdom.
30 And behold, there are last who shall be first, and there are first who shall be last. 30 Behold, there are some who are last who will be first, and there are some who are first who will be last.”
31 The same hour certain Pharisees came up, saying to him, Get out, and go hence, for Herod is desirous to kill thee. 31 On that same day, some Pharisees came, saying to him, “Get out of here and go away, for Herod wants to kill you.”
32 And he said to them, Go, tell that fox, Behold, I cast out demons and accomplish cures to-day and to-morrow, and the third [day] I am perfected; 32 He said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I complete my mission.
33 but I must needs walk to-day and to-morrow and the [day] following, for it must not be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem. 33 Nevertheless I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the next day, for it can’t be that a prophet would perish outside of Jerusalem.’
34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the [city] that kills the prophets and stones those that are sent unto her, how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen her brood under her wings, and ye would not. 34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, like a hen gathers her own brood under her wings, and you refused!
35 Behold, your house is left unto you; and I say unto you, that ye shall not see me until it come that ye say, Blessed [is] he that comes in the name of [the] Lord. 35 Behold, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
